AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile APUs

AMD debuted (finally!) their Ryzen 4000 mobile chips at CES that are confusingly Ryzen 2 CPUs that are analogous with their Ryzen 3000 desktop parts.

I like what I see, especially on the power front. I know many people said that 7nm Ryzen chips had the potential to be very power efficient and if AMD's slide deck is to be believed they have succeeded. Most of the power efficiency has come from the 7nm process. As well, the 7nm process looks to be allowing AMD to cram up to 8 cores onto a laptop chip.

Do you guys think AMD has a product that will be as competitive on the laptop as the 3000 series is on the desktop? I'm thinking that the 4600 will be the best buy like the 3600 is in the desktop space. The problem in the laptop space is AMD needs design wins. At least on the desktop I don't need some company to choose for me, I can just by the chip myself.

Desktop APUs are not premium products.

Van Gogh is an extremely premium product.

It's very doubtful anything more than Renoir will hit the desktop if you ask me.

Looking at the 4500U review Renoir gaming performance regresion is a possibility, specially vs the 3400G, so not launching Renoir in desktop or only use it for GE/PRO models may make sence. But i dont think so.

Keep in mind that the limiting factor is AM4's memory bandwidth anyway. DDR5 should change that (on AM5 or some such). But before that any more powerful iGPU than in 2400G/3400G/Renoir on AM4 is a pipe dream.

if RDNA2 is really more bandwidth efficient gtx1050 perf on dual channel DDR4 is possible.

The total area within the usable space in matisse is around ~472 mm2.

A die that is bigger than Renoir can fit a single HBM stack. It is technically possible to fit two HBM2e stacks. However, one would probably be enough.

~250 mm2 + 2x 92mm2 ~= ~434 mm2

The ideal size is ~190 mm2 + 1x 92 mm2 ~= ~282 mm2

Renoir to Van Gogh is equivalent to Kaveri to Carrizo. Van Gogh is an evolution of Renoir w/ GFX1032/DCN2.5/VCN2.5/etc.
Renoir is potentially capped at 1.8 GHz(iGPU max boost) across 15-45W, Van Gogh can probably in 65W push it to 2+ GHz.

Renoir(Medium APU)/Van Gogh(Big APU) => Cezanne(Medium APU)/Rembrandt(Big APU)
Seems to be the speculative trend on other sites.

Can you share some of your sources? This is really interesting information. I saw what Komachi said about Renoir being RDNA2, but all this about it being a big APU is new.

This would be very expensive to make, especially with a stack (or two) of HBM2E on there. I wonder who would want such a product.
