So EposVox and Wendell from L1 Techs apparently did a collab on Ryzen 3000/Navi reviews for content creation and game streaming. There are several youtube vids linked in Wendell's L1Techs Ryzen 3000 & Navi megathread, but this one is the most relevant for game streaming performance:

tl;dw - Ryzen 3900X is a monster, 3700X is reasonably capable, and EposVox wants Threadripper 3000 now because the 3900X makes even his delidded, lapped, overclocked to the max 7980XE obsolete. All on a $50 B450 board. "V8 in a Go-Kart, and the Go-Kart is beating the Ferrari" LOL

Haha. By extension, this makes iMac Pro and Mac Pro look like idiotic garbage. Particularly when Threadripper 3000 hits, it will make the entire Apple lineup a laughingstock. They don't even have gaming as a fallback edge scenario either.

I'm really curious to see how the 3950X pans out. The 3900X is going to let me combine all my workflows + gaming into 1 rig so it's worth the price of admission already. I may wait until Ryzen 4000 to get a 16c+ part simply because the 3900X is such a huge leap forward.

how the enthusiasts (translate fanboys) forgot about PCIE 4.0 and are silent of x570, since it is such a trainwreck, it is clear how pcie 4 advantage is nowhere to be seen around
wonder why lol

If I buy Ryzen 3000 series I will get a x570 simply because I will probably keep it close to a decade and you can easily add new tech via add-on card. Current mobo was high end too, well high end back then admittedly is lower mid-range now price-wise but it did have USB 3 and sata3 which was a blessing given how long it's been running.

But yeah the whole chipset thing is a bummer and since threadripper 3 will probably have 0 downside in gaming, I'm inclined to wait a bit and see.

On a cool note, with Zen2 it seems like there is little reason not to go with an affordable B450 Mobo and basic 3000 or 3200 memory along with stock cooling. Very little gain from pressing higher than that, totally marginal. While it might not be thrilling from an enthusiast/tuner perspective, it's great from a value point of view. More $ for storage/GPU/whatever.
Yes to this, but ….but.... I have Gigabyte k5 x370 with 1600x and 3200 cas 16 memory and I am itching to go 3700x ($329)with Gigabyte x570 Ultra ($300) some ballistic sports 2x8 G which I hope can do 3600 at least cas16, ($70) PCIE 4 1TB Auros nvme ($260) with a 5700xt card ($400) maybe more if mid august Saphire Nitro. Micro center will give me 100 off bundle. Initial layout $960 - 100 $860. And wait for GPU. Just use a 580 or 290 card or whatever else I have laying around the house. My 3 kids owe me Christmas Birthday and Fathers day presents so that should cover the $860 LOL. Just need to pony up for the GPU and give the old rig to the wife in a small case. After typing this I just convinced myself that this is maybe silly but what I am going to do.

a decade, you are choosing a wife? :)
I wont pick x570 even if they pay me for it
that chipset is reused IO die and https://www.techspot.com/review/1871-amd-ryzen-3600/ this power consumption difference between 3600 and 3700X tells us just how effective ryzen cores are power wise and that IO die is a power hog

The problem with PCIE4 is that you are typically paying £200 extra for the X570 mobo over a B450. That £200 could be better spent on a better GPU.

That's the spirit! Lemonade stands, cookie sellouts, old inventory liquidation (who needs toys anyways)!!!

On a more serious note you may want to give it a month or so to let prices and software fixes settle.

If the PCIe4 is a must, then go for it, but you might be better served just going B450 + 3700X, you'll still get that $50 bundle discount from MC. Spend the money you save on the SSD/X570 to go for a 2080 Super which comes out July 23rd

I think he was meaning that he would buy the parts as gifts for himself on behalf of his kids.

If you want to use the new NVME drives with the amazing speeds you will have to go X570 for PCIe 4.

I agree good advice , Over the last 40 years I have seen many first adopters go through growing pains.

Years ago when I gamed a lot I would say yes to a high end really well made card like the Super 2080 or 2080ti. Now I game less and can appreciate anti lag because my reflexes need the help for the few games I play. I guess the point I am trying to make is we all are different and have different needs and wants and there is no single right solution for everyone but your suggestion is valid for a lot of folks who game more than me.

I would like PCIE 4.0 for the new NVMe SSDs, but perhaps that is not needed for now. I will stick with this ASrock X470 board for a while I think. I wonder if there will be modded bios's for some X470 boards to allow PCIE 4.

One big take away for myself, is that we all (most of us?) emphasized memory channels and bandwidth too much in the past. Here we have Zen2 doing as much useful work on 1/2 the bandwidth previously used (TR). Cache?

Can I pair the 3900X with a 4xx series motherboard?
I don't really need PCIE 4 and I dislike the sound of "active cooling" for the motherboard... what is that exactly anyway?

Impressive performance by Zen2. My hat is off to the AMD Zen2 team. Job well done.

Intel needs to respond.

As a programmer, this I particularly like:

compiler.png

techpowerup.com

I currently have a Ryzen 1700. According to this benchmark, upgrading to 3700X should reduce compile times by a third. Not bad, especially considering 3700X is a 65 W part, same as 1700. It is also just slightly behind what i9-9900K can do at much more power. Impressive!

Are there any other reviews out there testing development and compilation workloads? AnandTech used to include a compilation test in their benchmark suite, but has omitted that in their Ryzen 3000 review for some reason.

Addendum: Phoronix's review has a couple of build tests (Linux kernel and LLVM). They say: "The 3700X can also build a Linux kernel as fast as the i9-9900K while the 3900X was just seconds behind the i9-7960X."

Here are TechGage's compilation tests in Linux, showing great results as well, with Ryzen 3700X matching i9-9900K:

TechReport has a test building the Qt SDK with the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler, which shows similar results:

It means there's a tiny fan attached to the chipset heatsink. It's not actually active cooling (the computer dorks got that wrong 20 years ago) but that's what they mean.

I see, I see. Thanks. I wonder how audible this small fan is going to be? Is it really necessary in a case with good airflow?

I've always known this as a form of active cooling. What is your definition of active cooling that a fan to blow heat away from the heatsink doesn't fit?

Active cooling requires using energy to transfer heat away such as is used in thermoelectric cooling (Peltier) or heat pumps.
