 They are better than any of the liberal rags, or networks.

This is a real story. Compare that to ABC, NBC, or the New York Times who are willing to write fiction if it suits their liberal propaganda.

Has the Fareed Zakaria scandal been talked about yet in the politics and news section yet?

So some propaganda is better than other propaganda?

Are you a member of the military or associated in any way? If not, how in the hell would you know? I assure you the DOD is deficient to perform its basic functions in many many categories.

Also these attack subs can indeed utilize cruise missiles of the nuclear variety.

Yet you've listed nothing specific.

Pretty much all subs can carry cruise missiles (nuclear or conventional). They weren't sneaking in to deliver a nuclear strike with 12 slow cruise missiles that in total yield less than a single Trident D5.

IMO if the story is true, the most likely reason is that we don't give a f*ck. It's not the cold war anymore, the Soviet Union isn't threatening our ports and waterways, so if they want to have one of their subs sit in the Gulf, who cares?

In the cold war, we likely would have had US SSNs waiting to tail enemy subs coming into the Atlantic. Even today we now have 2X the number of active SSNs than Russia - and they have nothing to match our newest subs.

And frankly, from what I've read, the most updated Akula is barely a match for an updated 688. At very low speeds, it's pretty quiet, but at higher speeds it still can't match up with a 688.

So it was basically just sitting there, trying not to get noticed by anyone.

It's a fucking submarine, those things are incredibly difficult to detect even with some detection capabilities

Yes and no. Russian submarines were built for specific purposes; some for speed, some for depth, some for stealth, some for firepower. The Akula was built for depth and stealth.

The Akula is a very difficult submarine to track and it is alarming that it was operating undetected in the Gulf of Mexico.

They often can, and it is not an issue of us letting them.

I read somewhere they developed a stealth "caterpillar drive"....

Those who works in the D-FENS industry would like to thank you for your support. Please spread the word and let everyone knows about this article. The Defense budget is too small and it's time we double/triple/quadruple it.

This is one of my biggest issues with so called conservatives. They want us to shrink the government and lower taxes but they don't want us to touch the military. Why is the military any less poorly run and bloated than any other government institution?

The military is one of the duties of the federal government specifically mentioned in the Constitutions.

Look at how many federal programs aren't, and how many of those programs should be run by the states per the Tenth Amendment.

How many Democrats really want to cut the military budget? As soon as some of those cuts happen in their state they support military spending as much as any Republican.

Military spending is higher now under Obama than it was during the Bush years.

Why do you have an issue with conservatives when Obama has spent more?

I think it's about the same actually... maybe slightly higher. Projected budget for next year is lower though IIRC.

Didn't Obama promise that closing Guantanamo was going to be one of the first things he did as President?

Funny how often I heard Bush called a war criminal over Guantanamo, yet none of those people say the same about Obama.

At least he's semi closing it lol.

I hate how some threads derail into political threads where people troll

Funny how you say funny yet you have no sense of humor :(. It was a joke about obama. I'm not a partisan hack, this isn't the politics and news forum.

The thick layer of oil from the BP spill created a nice "blanket"for the subs to cruise under, you didn't think millions of barrels of oil just disappeared did you?.

The contract for the Virginia class submarine is already in place broham. We already have built a bunch and bunch more are planned, too.

There are already contracts out for a new boomer class of boats, too, that will start to be built around 2020.

Whew, thanks for the good news breaux. I feel safe again.

Because idiots who think like you won't let him cut more.

BTW, Bush got us into two 10+ year wars and never raised taxes. That is not conservative and has no precedent in American history. You don't start long term wars and cut taxes, unless you're fucking insane. The Republican party is intellectually bankrupt.

Im sorry but Im not especially concerned. One sub doesnt worry me. The several thousand, multi-megaton warheads they could launch at us DO concern me. They sit there everyday and could strike us before I could make it home from my office. Thankfully, it does indeed seem that not too many people are interested in incinerating half of the planet so even at that, I sleep at night.

I hope Captain Ramius enjoyed the Gulf.

But it is American supremist propaganda to think they cannot slip past our defenses. The Russian submarines do slip past our defenses often enough for such concern to be real.

For my understanding behind this point of view, I do not need to depend up on information that is made publicly available.

Thinking more on Techs statement, with all our resources employed in that region, we should have known about the submarine. It may have slipped away undetected for 3 maybe 4 days at the most but certainly not weeks as the article mentioned. Therefore, I begin to think this article is purely FUD for political reasons to support the military budget.

I live on the Gulf coast and am in the Gulf quite often and it is extremely rare for me to see a US Navy vessel. Usually the only time we do is when they are coming to NOLA for some sort of public event (I think it was the USS Wasp recently at the "Tall Ship" fest). Even if they are I highly doubt they would even be thinking of trying to find a sub and even if they were it would be a real shitty sub if it got caught by whatever resources we had pissing around in the Gulf of Mexico.

Who knows? Maybe the reason we're not worried about it, is because the whole time the Russians were there, they had a Seawolf class boat half a mile off their stern, and never knew that it was there?? Seeing as the Seawolfs are as quiet as a submarine can get, there's no telling, is there? :hmm:

Doubt it. All three Seawolf class boats are home in WA. I don't think they'd randomly drive all the way to the Gulf, just to tail a Russian boat that I'm sure we already know the acoustic signature of. Those boats run much more secretive missions than that.
