Also, I wanted to add, we detected a Russian Bomber off the coast of CA recently, too. I think Russia for some reason or another is trying to send us a message. Not sure why or what the cause is.
They seem to do it every once in a while as a "just to fuck with you tactic" they typically fly bombers into Alaska.

How else are you going to hawk old Soviet gear to the rest of the world that can't afford to pay retail for stuff from Europe/US or isn't paying nice with us. Gotta demonstrate it.

Being a bit older than most on this forum I can safely assure you that whenever anyone threatens to reduce the military budget these kinds of stories appear.

Notice that Forbes is really using a story by the Washington Free Beacon, a right wing publication. And the Beacon does not give a source, on that "they have learned" this info.

Also, if you follow the link and read the Forbes article its all about how completely unprepared Russia is for an attack on the US and how overwhelming our forces are. It also goes on to explain that Russian actions have clearly demonstrated they are not looking for a confrontation, and in fact have no hostile intent against the US. In fact, that is what the story is about.

Rest assured we have the best military by a huge amount over even the next three biggest militaries in the world. Two of which are our allies.

Wait? What? Is this still ATOT? Logic, intelligence, and wisdom...all in one post.

Yep, this has budget gamesmanship written all over it.

This is why it is so alarming.

I'm alarmed.

I insist we immediately increase our military budget to ensure we can detect all Russian subs in the Gulf. I'm tired enough on 5 hours per night as is, and that's only from worrying about the Chinese landing on the west coast. Thanks to this wonderful news I don't think I'll ever get to sleep again, and that will seriously suck.

Maybe we should ask BP for another oil spill. That should keep their subs out of there for a while.

I'm alarmed. ...

A few days to a week, sure, no problem because that is normal. The article stated several weeks in a geographically confined area. That would be a problem.

However, it seems the article is FUD spread for political purposes. This leaves us all discussing nonsense.

This leaves me (and a few other people in the forum) available to discuss facts concerning submarine or anti-submarine warfare to prevent misconceptions.

There is a lot of water in the world. Or just in the gulf. It is easy to get lost in the oceans and gulfs of the world. All the armchair sailors in here are comical. We do it and they do it. I have had some wonderful periscope liberty in russia... :O

What the hell are they going to spy on in the gulf? Nothing to see.

Ho Hum...

Forbes.

Need I say more.

Sounds like a right wing anti-Obama agenda....just in time for elections. Yay!

 They are better than any of the liberal rags, or networks.

This is a real story. Compare that to ABC, NBC, or the New York Times who are willing to write fiction if it suits their liberal propaganda.

Has the Fareed Zakaria scandal been talked about yet in the politics and news section yet?

It's not a boomer, and we're not at war with them, so who gives a shit? If we were at war we'd be looking a lot closer, and even now, when we're not at war, I bet we know where most of their boomers are. An attack sub isn't going to take out any cities.

This is a real story.

The Russians used a several decade old attack sub that we have known all along can't always be tracked to hang out off the coast of the US for a while. Somebody call the 1980s...we've got a scorcher of a story regarding the Evil Empire.

I doubt we would publicize the fact that we could actually detect them, better to keep that information secret and surprise them when they think they are invisible. We know they aren't going to do anything other than swim around for a bit, so let them have their joy ride 'undetected'.

yea my first thought as well, no point giving them information at all. better to track until you need to blow them up:p

That the military is not undermanned nor under equipped.

Are you a member of the military or associated in any way? If not, how in the hell would you know? I assure you the DOD is deficient to perform its basic functions in many many categories.

Also these attack subs can indeed utilize cruise missiles of the nuclear variety.

It's amazing how articles like this work so easily to scare some people. Do they just have no filter whatsoever?

And so what they just nuke LA for no reason? I know the Russians are crazy and drunk but they aren't completely suicidal like some of those other folks.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to justify a weakening defence and downplay the reality of the situation. Yea, this observation isn't the end of the world but it is indicative of the state of our eroding military.

This story is just one of many that just happened to be elevated to the media.

No, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I am in a position to recognize a real issue and a growing threat that does indeed impact the ability of this country to defend itself.

Many are saying this story is just a ploy for the media and DOD to defend its budget; the reality is the DOD doesn't even begin to make public the degraded state that its really in.

OK, name them.

As the DOD consumes about $1T, that's one trillion dollars, of the yearly federal budget, I just don't see how the DOD is underfunded. You have to remember the DOD budget is more than what is presented as the $700B+ budgeted for the DOD specifically.....there's the nuclear weapons and research the military has but is exclusively budgeted under the DOE (Dep't. of Energy) at approx. $22B, Veteran's Affairs, the unknown part of the State Dep't. budget (foreign arms sales is the minimum acknowledged by them at ~$6B, while some put forth the entire State Dept. budget should be included in defense), the DOD non-DOD contractor budget which is hidden and not included in the "official" DOD budget, satellite budget for the military---hidden within NASA, NSA budget----which is mostly directed towards the military and segments of the military are essentially extensions of the NSA, like the ASA or Army Security Agency (which I worked for for approx 18 months) and their Naval and Air Force brothers, etc., etc.

The entire direct and indirect DOD expenditures of our budget is estimated at just over $1T, much higher than the "obvious" $700B quoted all over the place.

So, with all the spending the military gets, how is it deficient in any respects? Care to share? Certainly not in ships (our navy's the largest on the planet, many times over), planes (our aircraft are some of the most advanced on the planet, just no huge numbers due to the military's fascination with technology vs. numbers....and many times, numbers overwhelm superior technology---history shows that repeatedly), equipment.....maybe boots on the ground? But that's simply a failure of the volunteer force we try to field.

I just fail to see how the military is underfunded and wholly deficient in trying to perform its basic function.
