Attrition comes to fruition, dont back down now.

Unspoken in this game of bargaining for future strategic military advantage is how Putin is trying to save face from his horrifically miscalculated and gone sideways three day "Special Military Operation". He's already been militarily and personally humiliated by his failures to execute his anticipated total takeover of Ukraine.

So the only way from him to come out of this with some bruised pride while maintaining the respect (fear) he's instilled on his subjects so as to keep himself from going the way of Hitler, Mussolini, Hussein, Gaddafi and Nicolae what's his face from Romania et al is to get himself as much Ukrainian sovereign territory as possible before he runs out of mobik meat and petroleum products.

It's both. Just another unfit appointee that doesn't know wtf he's doing, while in waaay over his head.

"Witkoff, a real estate magnate with no background in diplomacy, broke with standard protocol by going to the meeting without a State Department notetaker and thus left without a record of Putin's precise proposals, said one source with knowledge of internal administration dynamics."

“Russia has no intentions of ending this war,” wrote Finland’s president, Alex Stubb, in a post on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who like Stubb was one of seven European leaders who met with Trump last week at the White House alongside Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, also lamented the attack featuring more than 600 missiles and drones in a single night: “this is Russia’s idea of peace,” he wrote. “Terror and barbarism.”

Sure.
Id take Putin actually engaging in peace talks as evidence that shit is getting real on the home front... In that situation what does Ukraine do? Suppose we are there where Ukraine is about to win this attrition thing, Putin steps forward, let me keep this land you can have EU troops and a deadzone bufferzone.
Ukraine recognizes that they've all but won this thing so incentive is to flip the bird, but if they do how will the Americans react? Trump will have a public meltdown on Ukraine and cut all support, sanction any European country that dare support Ukraine...
In the end Trudeau manages to get the Nobel, for knocking up Ivanka and thus causing the coronary that the entire world has been praying for.

If that happens, the humillation for Trump would be on the top levels. And would create his own prizes.

Putin shows up in China to Xi's summit with his hat in his hand, is the only leader not greeted by dancing, music and dignitaries. Haha. Chinese love their slights.

While Azeribaijan's Aliyev and his wife arrive to an honor guard and dancers... How about that.

Putin is responsible for ruining the finances of Russia, thereby creating a huge burden for the CCP at a time when they are barely keeping their own heads above water. Xi is going to put shorty in his place.

World War 3's Axis powers are putting on a good show.
And what better time, with their lapdog in the White House?

The West has, perhaps, never been weaker than we are right now.
So long as Ukraine stands alone, the Axis will continue to grow bolder. Additional war will follow.

Mean while Trump is certainly helping Xi's global strength by alienating the entire world.

There are reports that Trump has asked Ukraine to stop the destruction of Russian refineries. I doubt the Ukrainians will agree to any such thing...

Another line of discussion concerned Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil refineries. The United States urged Kyiv to temporarily suspend these attacks, promising in return to use its channels of influence to persuade Russia to refrain from strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

In essence, this amounts to an attempt to establish at least an air ceasefire, or potentially a broader cessation of hostilities. According to participants, this issue is expected to become decisive at the technical level of future Ukrainian-Russian negotiations.

Russia is striking the cities and energy sites in trying to wreak the Ukrainian morale. Its their last gambit before talks begin. They want Ukraine to come begging for peace. So why would Russia stop this?

If I were Ukraine i would say sure we will stop attacking Russian refineries as soon as Russia leave our territories.
