Obama hoax fools Limbaugh

It must have seemed so perfect. An obscure blogger unearths some pages of President Obama's college thesis. The report supposedly comes from big-time journalist Joe Klein of Time magazine. And the thesis has some real gems: like Obama's disdain for the Constitution.

The whole thing was nothing more than a satirical post on a humor blog. But Rush Limbaugh, who quoted from the supposed thesis on his radio show, sure wasn't laughing. Here's how it went down.

An unknown blogger picked up on a made-up post meant as a joke, which claimed that Joe Klein had gotten his hands on 10 pages of student Obama's college thesis. Rush Limbaugh jumped on it, which immediately sparked Web searches on "obama thesis."

Supposedly titled "Aristocracy Revisited," the excerpt revealed the president had "doubts" about the "so-called founders." Juicy. Except not true. Limbaugh discovered halfway through his show that he'd been had, but defended himself by saying basically the thesis felt true. Listen in to Rush's mea sorta culpa.

Joe Klein finally jumped in, and called the report "nonsense" on his Swampland blog, and the blogger who thought the hoax was real also apologized.

Let's hope someone kept their sense of humor in all this. Still, for a humble post to go from humor blog to major media outlet sure seems impressive. Someone ought to write their thesis on it. For real.

OMG way too funny!! RUSH was punked!!!

The sad thing is, if the NY Times or Keith Olbermann had done this, we'd see the right claimed how poor their standards are, how you can't believe what they say.

But their bias for Rush will lead them to do the opposite here and make excuses for him why it's not his fault.

IMO - this reflects that Rush appears not to check hi facts much, or to have any accurate sense of Obama, rather a poisoned and bline ideological caricature - but that's the least of Rush's problems. His real problem is his spewing of false and harmful ideology to make a buck from the fools - and to harm our nation and the world, including his own audience, in so doing.

Dan Rather anyone?

I've always believed that Rather was set up with the Nat'l Guard paperwork.

When Rush found out this was a hoax did he correct himself or did he keep repeating the lie and claim that the store was true?

If you dont know I suggest you check out the transcript at his web site:

Also from MediaMatters, this "retraction" when El Rushbo was informed the "thesis" was bogus:
I'm also told that the blog containing the passage on Obama's thesis is a satire blog. ... But we know he thinks it. Good comedy, to be comedy, must contain an element of truth, and we know how he feels about distribution of wealth; he's mad at the courts for not going far enough on it. So we stand by the fabricated quote because we know Obama thinks it anyway. That's how it works in the media today.

His Imperious Flatulence remains a Class Act...

He was absolutely set up. Yet I have never seen anyone really track it down. The response to the guard story was almost instantaneous. There were folks waiting in the wings who knew the documents to be forgeries and they pounced too fast. The outcry started before the story was even finished airing. People were claiming the docs forgeries based on low definition TV shots of the docs. Yes, CBS failed to fact check and suffered the consequences. However the forger silently slunk away.

See my post above. He acknowledged the "thesis" was bogus, but insisted that his conclusions drawn from it were true. Some retraction.

This is stupid.

The Obama thesis hoax is stupid.
Rush's "it's fake but oh so true anyway" statement is stupid.
The whole thing is stupid.

Did it occur to you that Rush was lampooning the media?

When it was learned that the racist Rush comments were fake many in the media said the same thing as Rush.

Also, when we learned that Rather used fake documents Rather came out and said that the document may be fake, but the story is still true.

If you actually listened to Rush you would know that this kind of sarcasm is normal for him.

Hillary Clinton murdered Vince Foster!!!!

Okay, not really.

But that someone could claim she did just goes to show what a black-hearted, murderous witch she really is!

SOP for Limbaugh, FOX, and the rest of the VRWC.

I am subjected to the rantings of that obnoxious gasbag all too regularly, courtesy of a dim bulb at work who hangs on every word of Divine Truth. You are right in asserting that this is routine for El Rushbo; I can't begin to enumerate the times I've heard him intone in all apparent seriousness, "Let me tell you what he (they) really meant by that...".

Shame on Rush for falling for this so quickly. Rush was "punked" by a lie that still reflected the truth.

So, then you feel Dan Rather was correct in his report as well?

If Non Prof John thinks that his link is a proper Limbaugh apology or an admission of not fact checking, he is absolutely nutso. But then again, what is new.

And for that matter, no one has ever accused Limbaugh of having any integrity or credibility.

Would the world end if Rush simply manned up and admit that he made a mistake?

It simply amazes me how Rush, Fox "News" and all the other airhead right wing alarmists, fear/hate mongers and propagandists like Beck can, on the one hand broadcast such outlandish lies, distortions and disinformation about the Obama Admin, and yet on the other portray themselves as legitimate sources of "fair and balanced" news and "commentary". And to top it all off, they get hellaciously indignant and dramatically self-righteous when their skirts get lifted up and their panties get pulled down to expose their true colors.

What a crock full of whacked out, greed-driven egotistical prima donna's they are, which says a lot about the folks who idolize these cretins.

Funnier than Britain plagiarizing some college student's thesis in its Iraq Dossier, since this didn't actually contribute to a loss of life.

Yep - or any anger-filled, alarmist talk radio host, for that matter. A person would have to have some kinky and unspeakable unfulfilled needs.
