Running Bad For Your Body?

I had a torn quad for a year and now Im ready to run. All I wanna do is lose the little weight I have on the tummy and I want a lean face and upper body.

I love running and I had my first in over a year on thursday (55 minutes was all I could do flat out). But a freind at work says it strains your heart and will affect my hips/ankles in later life.

Is there another way of getting lose weight (lifting wieghts?) quickly?

hips ankles knees will all be effected by running.

swimming is probably the most workout you could have and its probably the least damaging.

Yes, running is a lot of impact on your leg joints, but what can you do really. I bike (did 18 miles today on a mountain bike, on roads though), but it's just not the same as a good run.

i can swim but I might try biking instead. I just want a leaner body. I'v curved my drinking and usally just have spirits instead of cider.

nice low impact exercise. chicks seem to dig guys with "swimmer" bodies....

cuz they are typically look ripped because they have zero fat on them.

i wish i was like that.

maybe ill start swimming, i dont have anyone to weight lift with, so ill just swim which can be done individually and will atleast get me sorta cut.

You can't spot reduce fat like losing fat only on your face. You need to reduce your over all body fat to do that. A good low impact excersice is the eliptical machine at the gym. Good luck and cut out the soda and drinking it will do you wonders.

fvck that. ill just swim and play soccer, flag football, and more sports.

i weighed 155 last year before college.

went home from last year at 195

came back this year at about 185.

i want to go out of here at about 175-180. with more shape to my body.

i have a gut, its there, but i have a lot more mass than i did last year, muscle included in that

Heh...well that's a new one for me 😛

A few tips to avoid that:

-Don't overtrain or push yourself too hard. Running every day can cause you to lose muscle...run 3-4 times a week, with a day between runs.

-Wear good shoes (I -highly- recommend getting some Dr. Scholls gel inserts! I have them in my running shoes because my feet would ache...I no longer have those problems with the inserts, and they definately have made a difference)

-Don't let your feet just fall...control your stride so you don't 'clop'.

all great points,
thought I'd mention don't run on pavement.

I swim, best workout out there.

Lifting weights will only take what fat you've stored and turn it to muscle, you don't lose weight by weight-training.

I've been running for 20+ years, it's all in the shoes. Get the right shoes and you'll have no problems. And running makes your heart stronger btw.

just being picky, i don't think fat "turns" into muscle.
