running and back pain

I used to be able to run 4-6 miles without a problem (3-4 years ago), now my back starts to hurt after 1 mile, and it's pretty unbearable. I do have the same shoes i've had since high school football, LOL...cross trainers, still work well, only really used them for running and turf days.

I also run with my dog now ... is that putting my back out of wack when I run you think? She sometimes stops and gos ... didn't think it's a big deal, but maybe it is?

right above my tail bone, no never had it xrayed...it's only been an issue when running.

I can hike, with a 60lbs pack for 10-15 miles no problemo.

sounds like an sacroiliac sprain... it happens when you have abnormal alignment of your spine causing a poor distribution of compressive load at the sacroiliac joints.

new shoes will help, chiropractic treatment will help, physical therapy exercises will help.

I've been wanting to go to the chiro, haven't been since football...I might have to consider it, too bad insurance doesn't cover it, i'll have to ask.

How is your core/lower back strength? Do you work out at all? Good running form is highly dependent on core strength. I work my core/back like crazy so I can hold my body upright properly during LONG trail runs that typically include jumping, ducking, scrambling, climbing, and descending. Just a thought.

I worked out for about 6 months or so, then had to stop for a trip I had coming up, and some other obligations, and haven't gotten back at it..that was about 4 months ago. I always thought my core was decent, but I do sit at a desk all day.

Makes sense, I DID when a lot of Golden Saucer races.

insurance does cover it.

If this is true, any good resources for GOOD chro's in the Minneapolis area?, that take insurance?

I'd be more then happy to visit the chiro if it's cover, even a bit.

that's not good

It's the job, lots of computer action, and the infrequent server repair.

any chance you can take 12 minutes out of your day to do some kettlebell exercises or something or just some easy floor exercises? does your office building have a gym?

you don't have to work out, exactly, but doing something to strengthen your core is ideal. also, depending on how your x-rays look, you may need specific exercises to help restructure your spinal alignment. therapy exercises are kinda like coarse tuning and chiropractic care is like fine tuning for your spine. you often times need both together to get the best result.
