It's an AP flash right now. No news story yet. On MSNBC tv, at the moment.

Bush will probably announce it with his conference at 1pm EST, today.

EDIT: Robert Gates, former CIA director, will be nominated to serve as secretary of defense.

the voters have spoken and now our leaders have no choice but to listen.

Agreed. Yesterday, there was a republican house and senate....now it went overwhelmingly Democrat.

it's not like the Democrats get to choose who replaces him. Yay, Bush's hack steps down... to be replaced by... Bush's hack.

Victory?

very big one.

Bush has been stubburn in the face of growing pressure to replace him. Hell many high ranking military men have resigned over rumsfield being in charge.

this is huge.

the thing is, rumsfeld has offered his resignation twice during Bush's presidency. I guess the third time's the charm.

The buck stops at the oval office. Bush should resign, although there is no chance he will. And I am a Republican who voted for Bush.

He may be resigning now so that the replacement can still be confronted by the Republican congress. Otherwise it would be hell choosing a typical krony when needing Democrat approval.

You misunderstand me. I have nothing against Bush and if the election were held again, with the same cadidates I'd certainly vote for Bush again over Kerry. However, he's responsible for the failures of his underlings. If anyone should resign, it should be Bush.

After this election I get to go from cursing the Republicans for ruining the country to cursing the Democrats for ruining the country. Don't see much difference between the two.

Rumsfeld was a punk. Don't know much about Gates.
