Rumour-only 500 Kin phones sold

It didn't take a genius to figure out that a glorified dumbphone the same price as a smartphone requiring smartphone contract pricing would flop miserably.

Microsoft will just quietly bury this and include the functionality into Windows Phone 7.

If I was MS I'd buy 10K just to say the rumor isnt true then donate them to charity orgs. Its kinda surprising...they should have a prepaid version. There has to be more than 500 people who would use this phone.

I only know of it because they have a commercial with Natalie Portman-like woman in it, and a semi funny one about a guy deleting his old girlfriend. Didnt seem like a bad phone, but lots of features that I didnt care about.

Yep, the mandatory data charges required for a full blown smartphone killed this thing instantly. No surprises here.

Yeah, when it was first unveiled, I thought it had a chance of being a success if it had some special data plan for unlimited (or a lot of) texts and unlimited data for ~$15. When the pricing was announced I was astonished by M$'s stupidity.

Uh, I don't think it's MS that controls the cost of the text and data plans.

No, but they're the ones who chose Verizon. I think they just assumed that because VZW is the biggest carrier, it would automatically sell well. If they actually wanted it to succeed, they would have tried to push Verizon to sell it with a special plan or they would have brought it to a carrier that would be willing to do so.

It was under their control which provider to go to. M$ bragged about how much market research they did for the Kin. They should have focused on pricing a little bit more, 'cause it would have predicted this failure. I'm sure sprint or T-Mo would have been much more willing to negotiate the plan details than Verizon.

People still use "M$"? What is this, 1998? :awe:

Sorry but I couldn't resist.... 🙂

Microshot should just stick to badly copying OS X and hoard cash. You got 90% of market. No more stores which no one goes in, no more phones no one will buy and no more search engines no one uses.

And pray to God Apple does not come out with a gaming console.

EDIT LOL

500 units? That can't be right.

I saw a commercial for this phone the other day and actually felt a little sorry for Microsoft... they are sooo late to the game with this. Ballmer should stop shuffling managers around and consider replacing the guy at the top - himself. 🙂

i would have bought this phone for all of my kids if they offered a $9.99 unlimited data plan for it.

same here. theres no way a phone like that would use the amount of data a smart phone uses. vzw already told me there is two kinds of data when i tried to switch over to a family plan that included unl txt and data for all lines.

actually, my oldest is already managing to do almost 20k texts a month... mebbe i wouldnt get these for them...
