what I find funny is the closer we get to the 16th, the more amd bashing appears in this thread.

can't the hate wait for some worth while benchmarks? you would at least have a bone to pick with if there is a bone. 😎

a straight rebrand + 100$ higher price? after 2 years😕 amd might as well close up shop. I honestly didn't think this could come out of an enthusiast forum. 😵

But leaks already show it priced above GTX 970. So if all it got going for it is similar perf for with 4GB more, the same power draw, ummm sure, I guess to the uninformed it can compete.

Personally, I think no, not if they're only bring a card with 4GBs more of VRAM. It will get murdered by reviews and word of mouth would bury it faster than the original 290/290X articles did. I want to buy a Radeon, I got the money to do so now, but I won't, not if my options are so similar in performance and cost but one will roast my home during the summer.

That was a hypothetical scenario, 390 8GB at 290X performance but lower price than GTX970.
It would compete very nicely.

No point in adding pointless inline images. You know the rules.

At the very worst, AMD's 300 series will at least compete with a $500 980. 🙂

(just trying to stay positive...)

AMD always prices their stuff in line with the completion as far as I can remember, unless they have no competition at the time. So very puzzling why they would apparently just toss that all out the window.

Trust me. Eventhough the majority of people in this thread wants AMD to do well, we're not delusional. I want AMD to do well. If they're all rebadge with slight clock bumps, the bashing is well deserved.

That is funny.

Do you cook meals at home? Have warm water baths? Wash your clothes/dishes?

Tuesday will be a day of weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. An Armageddon of "I told you so", "OMG!", and "Amazing!". Regardless the outcome.

Board shot from a user over at [H] looks like the GPU is not foundry'd at GloFo. Doesn't look good for the GPU having any meaningful improvements. Not cool AMD.

The 290 and 290x are competitive cards, they still suffer from the stigma from the bad reference cooler.

Rebadge and re market with better cooler, more vram, higher clocked, and mature drivers. They should be able to sell them for more than they were selling the 290 and 290x.

What, little sarcasm too much for you? Yes, I do the above. I'm interested in the point you're trying to make, which I'm sure will tie to heat / power consumption. 😉

I think they need to add some other improvements besides those. New features that the 290/x don't support, even if minor improvements. Decreased Power Consumption should also be a requirement, at least enough on the GPU to offset the increased Memory capacity.

Well, the bashing is deserved then. Fiji had better put up a fight, being the only new part. The stigma of the 200 series will be gone for the average joe... not for us. These Hawaii dies still could have gone through a little refining at TSMC, you know, after two years they might've got the manufacturing a little better, considering they're overclocked compared to a 290/X at presumably the same consumption. Still, not cool.

On the upside, all of us 290/X owners can easily upgrade to a 390/X with a simple BIOS flash. Nice!

The problem is AMD can't create brand perception (which is often a reality distortion field) without having the important metrics down. If AMD leads in perf/watt/dollar over a good period of time the perception of the brand improves. Having the halo/performance crown is a good start of course.

I do agree performance and power metrics have an effect because it's perception becomes twisted and simplified as it trickles downward throughout the knowledge base until eventually (though not lastly) you end up with this guy who bought the 390x at Best Buy expecting it to have a 4096 bit bus while being loads faster than a 290x because he skimmed an article 3 months ago about HBM (and AMD's most powerful card from this generation should be the 390x and be 30% faster because SKU and nomenclature has said so for X amount of years).

With that said... it's the unicorn & rainbow-like essence (the distortion field) which NVIDIA has which AMD could establish through media outlets, tech sites and game streaming sites like Twitch. Twitch being a big one where the casuals hear something technical and repeat it like parrots - NVIDIA knows that which is why they maintain a presence with impressional people, likewise, who can make an impression. AMD needs to get in waist deep, even if they don't feel right in doing it, for the betterment of itself. GCN has it's advantages and AMD needs to capitalize on them.

Where's the beer emoticon?

It's not that hard to imagine that all R&D went into Fiji and perhaps a bigger Tonga if the rumors are true. The introduction of HBM is a whole new design, new memory controller, interposer etc.. it was probably a massive endeavor.
290x with 8GB of RAM is still a pretty good card if priced accordingly, so the 300 series will probably be used as a stopgap between Fiji and low end. They could do something to it but why refresh a dead architecture if HBM is the future?

AMD had like a 7% of workforce cut last year and their R&D is at all times low.

So yeah, no wonder they are lagging behind, it could probably be a lot worse.

Well - the whole 390/390x being produced at Go Flo was just a random theory anyway, it was never really backed by anything substantial. But I do want to see some tech sites get their hands on these cards and bench them to see just how similar/different they are to the 290/290X.

The boards are the same, the GPU appears to be the same. So why exactly is AMD selling at a higher price? Have they lost their mind?

why post this? :colbert:

390x just needs to be 10% above 980(20% above 290x) n 20% lower power usage vs 290x to be a competitive product again. in other words, pull a maxwell over maxwell.

I honestly don't get where all the fuss is coming from.

Yup
8gb powa!
