Hey man, I get it, I know a ton of people who have never left Texas (or even San Antonio). I was just surprised to see you post that.

I found it laughable to see that guy questioning Computerbase as a reputable site. They might not be #1, but if not, they're certainly very close to it. I'd certainly rate them above Ananadtech in gpu evaluations, at least based the time frame from x1900xt up to 7970 ghz. Perhaps Anandtech has gotten better in gpu evaluations recently though.

I wrote that before I realized that fiji was a higher level of performance...I thought that r9 390x WAS fiji...it's nice to see that's not the case.

I think that we already know the answer. It took me a bit to realize, I just assumed that they were keeping a lid on things b/c they didn't have anything good to say...but... perhaps the GF team isn't as loose-lipped as the TSMC people were? I'm sure that a bunch of them still feel like AMD employees, whereas TSMC has no reason to hold any loyalty to a company like AMD at all. JHH was right not to use GF imho, and, if they can produce cards for them at least as well as TSMC, AMD was also right to make the switch.

Huh?

I have probably written more doom and gloom on AMD's launch issues than anybody here over the past few days, and I have no issue with them as a company at all. If anything, I want them to succeed because I'm concerned about what lack of competition would do to video card prices. It's just that, based upon my experience over the past 8+ years of buying video cards and following the launches very closely, anybody who is 9 months late to the party never brings the best gift.

Not TOO old I trust...nah...980 hasn't been out long enough to get the special driver treatment.

Why? Lots of people get > top single card performance by going with a midrange dual card setup. I wouldn't want to do it, and perhaps you wouldn't, either, but it's a great way to get high performance on that shiny new 4k monitor without breaking the bank.

Putting this up here to prevent any more derailment.

Seems like a lot of sound and fury to me. The way I read it, they really do have 4gb, just .5gb is much slower memory? NV has done much worse things in the past imho, and, at the end of the day, 970 was still a solid card for the money. If anything, I would blame AMD for not having their refresh out in time...a really solid AMD card in that same segment would have hurt NV a lot more after that than little class-action suit.

EDIT: I think r9 390 and 390X are improved Hawaii updated to at least GCN 1.2 and on a way better process. We'll see soon enough.

In a nutshell, Nvidia wasn't upfront on the way they neutered the 970.
While it does have 4GB, it is actually split into 3.5GB & .5GB and that .5GB has magnitudes slower access than the 3.5GB.

Worse, it slows down the access to the rest of the memory.
 
A very compact card but that tubing really takes something from the aesthetics, looks ugly, flimsy and cheap might I add.

Only a problem for those that are into horrendous gaudy cases with windows and neon lights.

Anyone else will enjoy cramming a 4k monster into a sff case under their TV with excellent noise levels.
