Rumor: Sony announcement on Tuesday

Update: The PS2's price was cut from $129.99 to $99.99. No PS3 announcement was made. Bummer.

The interwebs are abuzz with a rumored Sony announcement for Tuesday. I think it is safe to say that price cuts are expected considering the slowish sales of the PS3 and Sony's fiscal year is about to end.

VGChartz has pictures showing the PS2 being dropped from $130 to $99.99.

Edit: David Jaffe twittered to expected a $100 price cut and possibly full software backwards compatibility.

Best GDC tidbit that I can share: A little Fishie told me about an upcoming $100 price break for ALL PS3 SKU's. Full software BC too? 🙂

The biggest thing that scares me about these rumors is that April Fool's is so close.

The only thing the PS3 had going for it was that it could play blu-ray movies. That's not even an advantage anymore as real blu-ray players have dropped in price considerably and the PS3 is no longer the best blu-ray player. Nobody buys the PS3 to play games.

I'm sure lots of people buy it just to play games, although I agree, it's no longer the "double-threat" package it was supposed to be.

I was at Best Buy on Saturday and was surprised that the PS2's were still $130, I figured they'd be well below $100 by now.

i bought my ps3 to play games.

I had a PS3. Sold it and bought a 360 for less money. All told, though, if I could do it again (and I can't... way too many Rock Band songs purchased) I would have waited for a PS3 redesign and pricecut and bought another.

Wow, did you come up with that one on your own?

How did a thread about PS2 price cuts turn into a console flame war?

Yeah, the first reply was the flamebait that started the fire.

It _looks_ like the announcement will be a PS2 price cut. That's not a bad thing, but it's not what Sony needs right now. If I were going to make another guess, they'll be announcing that Motorstorm+Resistance bundle. I'm in favor of such bundles, because then I can pick up a couple good games for dirt cheap. 🙂

I bought my PS3 to play games, but other than MGS4, I don't own another game for it. In fact, I haven't actually played a game on it (other than the occasional demo) since I beat MGS4 back in June.

It is, however, a fine Blu-ray player! So I guess it's been a worthwhile purchase?

Motorstorm series
Uncharted
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank series
Metal Gear Solid 4
Resistance 2
Killzone 2

nah... I don't play my PS3. Terrible gaming machine.

And that's only like half of the games I own for the PS3.

And I have a large Blu-ray collection. It still is very much a double-threat console to some degree. Sure, nobody will really be buying it exclusively for BD playback, but it allows a buyer to double dip into two markets for less than the price to enter both markets with separate, quality machines.

I don't regret one bit paying the launch price. Sure, would have been nicer to pay less, but there hasn't been I moment I haven't enjoyed the machine.

😛

Oh, and I am pretty much betting the announcement will be that Sony is slashing the price on both the PS2 and PS3.
The PS2 cut is already unofficially confirmed. PS3 pricecut is very important for Sony if they want to continue making the momentum in the market that they have slowly been lately.

Have a PS3 and the only times I have turned it on since I bought it was when I was reconfiguring my home theater system and wanted to make sure it was hooked up correctly. All good games that I like come out on all platforms so I just stick with using the 360. I really only bought it to play Final Fantasy, which will now be released for the 360 as well.

Full software BC would be nice (not that I've played any PS2 games since I got my current-gen systems), but I won't get my hopes up.

This would be awesome; I have the newer 80GB version and I would like to retire my 1st gen PS2 if possible. If the price cut doesn't happen, I will probably be forced to get a slimline soon; I don't know about the longevity of my PS2.

Edit: Sorry - I didn't add to the flame here. I don't own any PS3 games, and the only game that looks that great is MGS4. I much prefer the 360 controller and XBL is much superior to the crappy PSN. I do love the PS3 interface though, very polished. 🙂

Apparently that is a fake account.

I think there's very little chance of full software BC for PS2 titles, but I've been surprised before. At best, we might see something for very select titles that would be offered on PSN (kinda like Xbox Originals, just without discs).

Heh. Damn intrawebs!

I've always wondered why Sony didn't offer a BC upgrade option via PSN. If it's all software driven couldn't you just download it? I think they'd be able to sell for $20, and it would help clear up a lot of the SKU confusion.

Figures. I don't think we'll ever see full software BC in the PS3. Sony took BC out to save money, it doesn't make sense for them to spend a ton of money on development of software BC.

It wasn't all software, it was part software and part hardware. I think the graphics chip was hardware.

I wouldn't doubt if they are kind of slowly working on a software solution, but as a non-priority task.
