I know the disc read error popped up on older fat PS2s, haven't heard about it with the slim units.

This happened to my first PS2... 🙁

I lent my PS2 to a friend of mine, but since the PS3 doesn't have BC, I kind of want it back... now I'm wondering if I'll just let him keep it as a bday present or something and get myself a shiny new one so I can play my dozens of PS2 titles 😛
