The PS3 is pretty much guaranteed a big chuck of the market, especially if blue-ray takes off. The only question is whether it will dominate like the PS2 which at this point it isn't looking likely.

PS3 price cut = win for everyone. It'll force MS to finally drop the price of the 360. The Wii due to demand issues will stay the same and still sell like hotcakes, but if it's true, it's a win-win for consumers no matter if they're Sony or MS fanbois.

After having PS3 for a week now, it is worth 600$ for the Blue Ray player alone.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Darkness, Formula 1, Motorstorm are my favorites so far.

Well, it might force them to drop the price of the Elite, but not necessarily the entire line. However, if an Elite price drop occured, it would definitely affect the lineup in some way. My manager at Gamestop said something just last night to the effect that Microsoft was shipping much less Core systems than usual, although in my short time working for her, I've heard a few outrageous things she's told customers that were completely off base, stuff she argued with me to be true (an example is that the PS3 was experiencing a 56% failure rate, something she claims to have read on Sony's website :shocked🙂.

I don't see how they could drop the price of the Elite without dropping the price of the Premium. 😕 They are only $80 apart to begin with.

The Premium will hit $300 or $350, and the Elite will hit $400.

Mark my words 🙂

(I've too been hearing the Core is being phased out, they are rarer and rarer these days)

I'm thinking the Elite may go all the way down to $379.99 and the Premium to $299.99 to keep the current spread between the consoles.

We're all just pulling numbers out of our a** at this point though. 😉

Agreed, I was just trying to make a point that Microsoft wouldn't neccessarily be forced to drop price on the 360 if Sony drops the PS3 to $499. The Elite is the only SKU that would be obvious to change prices on, though, as the Premium would still be a great deal IMO, however if the Elite were to change prices, there isn't a big enough gap in prices for it the Elite to drop without it affecting the Premium.

However, if Microsoft does make any moves in regards to dropping prices, I wonder if they'll stick with the Elite monikor?

Kotaku

Today we've received word from moles at both Best Buy and Target that they too have word of a price drop. Our Target mole reports that the retail chain's inventory tracking program is listing retail for the 60GB PS3 at $499.99. And a mole at Best Buy tells us they just received their upcoming ads and that they all list the PS3 price at $499.99 as well.

Moley! Moley! Moley!

Sorry, I instantly think of Austin Powers 3 when I hear that word.

I can't believe that is nothing even tempting me to go to PS3. At least the Xbox and PS2 made it tough to decide on one.

I'm still tempted to pick up a PS3 system if the price drops. I'm mostly interested in the Blu-ray functionality. However, if I could run across a used PS3 system in great shape at my part-timer at Gamestop, I could apply my discount and get one for even cheaper, since our employee discount is good on used systems (not new ones, though, unfortunately). Used PS3 systems go for $499 used at Gamestop right now, I'm not sure what they would drop to after a new MSRP price drop.

EDIT: Also, grabbing one before they gut the backwards compatible hardware like the European units is also a big reason for grabbing one at a $499 price point, because you know it's inevitable that they do this.

Just wait until they announce the price drop (assuming they do) and then I'd assume Gamestop would drop the price on their used inventory. Grab a PS3 with the EE that's still in stock.

What is your discount, 15%?

This along with the 5 free movies almost convinces me to pick one up.

THen I remember the PS3 has absolutely 0 games for it and come to my senses.

Resistance? Motorstorm? A few other non-exclusive-but-still-good-or-great games (Oblivion, R6:Vegas, The Darkness, etc)? I really don't know what you're talking about.

And you can't say Resistance isn't "that good". It's an excellent game, and extremely fun to play (especially online).

The price drop is great news, and greatly needed (with some more good games). I still see a bunch of whining ahead...but that will probably happen until it reaches the $1 garage sale price.

Resistence feels like such an average/generic FPS game. If it wasn't a launch title that game would not have received nearly the same amount of recognitition.

Same goes for motorstorm. It's a good game, but it's very repetitive and just doesn't have much going for it other than graphics. The gameplay is fun but like I said, the tracks are very repetitive and they put you in a lot of situations that just aren't fun (types of cars you have to use vs. types of cars the AI uses).

Neither of those games are even close to being worth the $500 initial price IMO, and nothing is coming out any time remotely soon that interests me.

Eh, yeah, Motorstorm can get pretty boring like that. It's still a good game, and at least a glimpse of what could come to PS3 later.

If Resistance feels average/generic to you, I'd probably consider many other FPS games average and generic, Halo being the staple generic FPS game now. I have yet to see a FPS game that has such a variety of weapons (some being typical and those not typical, or those typical with really cool secondary functions). I think the weapons alone make it non-generic. Or, if you want to call it generic (like with the story), it's still a really fun, solid game.

Is it worth the $600? No, probably not. It's still an excellent game, launch or not (Such solid FPS games on consoles like Resistance are rare).

But yeah, Sony's denying the price cut? I guess it's just a mass retail movement. Regardless of what Sony says, if the PS3 takes a new price of $499 by retail or Sony, it's still good.

Sounds like Sony should have stuck with the 20 gig model. Didn't they drop it to try and get the lower loss on the 60 gig version?

According to Sony, there was no demand for it.

According to gamers everywhere, it was the only model that was ever out of stock, and it had the MOST demand because it was cheaper and was a better value than the 60 GB.

Sony doesn't have a history of lying about their consoles, so I guess we'll have to believe them. 😉

Ya, 15%. And that's what I was trying to allude to in my post, is that I could wait until Gamestop drops the price on their used inventory, I'm just not sure what that would be yet. At most, $449, but maybe as low as $429, which would give it to me at around $365 plus tax. But it'd have to be in pristine shape before I'd consider dropping that kind of change on a used system that expensive.

However, I stopped by work today to bring back a game I had borrowed, and they had gotten a couple of Wii's in stock today, so I bought one of those on a whim. I'm waiting until the wife gets home to see if she wants to keep it, otherwise I'll take it back. She claims to want a Wii, but who knows.

Man, I gotta get a part-time job at Gamestop.

What's the trade-in value of a used PS3?

Yep, the BR player is a killer app for me, and since I have never owned a PS2, being able to finally play the God of War series is another of the many bonuses that will come with ownership. The PS3 game library being weak means nothing to me until I've Finished GoW1&2 and Resistance. Glad ubertarget was sold out when I tried to buy it the other day, may have saved me a c note.

I think Target does price adjustments within a certain time period.
