Rum - I have a new favorite brand

Rum is my drink of choice.
Occasionally, I'll sip it straight, but usually I'm mixing it with Coke Zero. I find it to be too sweet with regular coke.
If it's a really horrible rum like Bacardi, I use about 1/2 rum and 1/2 coke. If it's something better, it's just a splash of coke.

For cheap rums, I usually buy Cruzan. But I've also tried the more expensive Cruzan varieties, along with multiple types of Appleton, Mt. Gay, and the occasional spiced rums or something like a Myers dark.

But last week I tried some Flor De Cana 7 year and man, that stuff is so good. It's so smooth and delicious. Easy to drink straight, but also fabulous for a rum and coke, as long as you go easy on the coke. I'm sure some will say that you are ruining it by mixing, but with just a splash of coke, having a good rum like this makes a huge difference over mixing with some garbage like Bacardi.

It wasn't cheap, but not too expensive either. I paid about $22 for a fifth. I honestly don't know that I can go back to drinking Cruzan, or even Appleton or Mt Gay.

I'm going to try the Flor De Cana 4 year and 5 year varieties next time and see how they compare. I think the 4 year was only about 15 bucks for a fifth.

I hate Bacardi with a passion. I'll take regular Captain any day.

The "good stuff", Black Cask or Private Stock, both left me unimpressed. Had some good rum down in Miami a few years ago, wished I had written the name down because I got so drunk I couldnt remember the next day.

I'll try out your recommendation.

I'll have to try that. Rum has always struck me as something that COULD be tasty, but I've never tried the good stuff.

I'll usually pick up the private stock if I'm getting captin- it's only a few bucks more. I agree, it's not amazing- but, again, it's only a few bucks more- and I like it quite a bit more than the regular spiced.

Give me some Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year.

Anyone I catch mixing this in my home will loose a finger.
I've got some Sailor Jerry in the freezer for that purpose.

heh, my wife is from nicaragua.

flor de cana is from there.

when i went there in 07, we bought the 1.75 liter bottle for about $11.50 USD.

it was awesome and i brought home a bunch 🙂

that stuff like doesn't give me a hangover as well. it is really good stuff.

This is the 7 year aged stuff, they have TONS of different ones over there (like at least 7 or 8 different kinds)

EDIT:

also a great drink that one of the locals showed me over there, you just fill a cup to the brim or higher with ice. pour some flor de cana in it to almost the top, and then put in a tiny bit of lemon juice in it and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

it's practically straight, but it does not taste like it. we were using fresh lemons too so it was even better!

Rum is too fucking sweet. Makes me sick.

I need my alcohol more dry than fire.
Not all rum is really sweet. Some are sweeter than others. I think Flor De Cana makes an extra dry variety.

I'm a fan of Pyrat XO for it's sipability. A sweet Rum, but oh so tasty. Not too expensive, either.
At our stores, 750ml of Pyrat XO is about $35. I guess it's all relative, but to me, that's on the expensive side.

I've only tried Malibu's rum. What are some better one?
If you're making fruity tropical drinks, Malibu coconut rum works great. But if you really want to taste rum, there are much better choices.

Come on, no love for Sailor Jerry's? I am disappoint.
I'm a Sailor Jerry's fan. I like it better than Captain when I'm in the mood for a spiced rum drink. But spiced rums are like flavored rums, in the fact that what you're tasting is the additional flavorings, not the rum itself.

I completely agree. If I'm in the mood for a spiced rum drink, then I prefer Sailor Jerry's over Captain...plus you get a bit more proof out of Sailor...correct?
