Rum - I have a new favorite brand

I completely agree. If I'm in the mood for a spiced rum drink, then I prefer Sailor Jerry's over Captain...plus you get a bit more proof out of Sailor...correct?

yes, it's 92proof.

I can drink no rum other than spiced rum. Clear rum is just not right.
And if it's not spiced, it's still not right.

Bringing this back up for a Friday night. I need to get some good rum, I may try a few of these. I usually buy Cruzan, but tonight I stopped at the store and they had a big bottle of Bacardi Select on sale for a steal. I was going to use it for a mixer so I figured what the hell, for this price it can't be that bad. PSA kids, it's THAT bad. Ugh. I can't put enough mixer in this garbage to hide the taste. At least with regular Bacardi you can mix it and it's fine. This stuff just overpowers whatever I mix with it. I'm not one to waste alcohol though, so I'll suffer through this 1.5L.

I always buy Havana Club. Pretty tasty stuff, and I prefer Castro getting a cut as opposed to Bacardi.

I suppose you can't get it state-side though, eh?

I am thinking of getting some rum and I am torn between EL DORADO 12 YEAR OLD and Mount Gay Extra Old.

The wife and I inherited a case of Wray & Nephew 17 Year Old.

We use this very sparingly and only for special occassions...it`s truly a most wonderful sipping rum!!

I went with the Mount Gay Extra Old.

a very nice rum. similar in taste to Appleton Estates' Extra 12 year old but smoother.

Rum is my drink of choice.
Occasionally, I'll sip it straight, but usually I'm mixing it with Coke Zero. I find it to be too sweet with regular coke.
If it's a really horrible rum like Bacardi, I use about 1/2 rum and 1/2 coke. If it's something better, it's just a splash of coke.

For cheap rums, I usually buy Cruzan. But I've also tried the more expensive Cruzan varieties, along with multiple types of Appleton, Mt. Gay, and the occasional spiced rums or something like a Myers dark.

But last week I tried some Flor De Cana 7 year and man, that stuff is so good. It's so smooth and delicious. Easy to drink straight, but also fabulous for a rum and coke, as long as you go easy on the coke. I'm sure some will say that you are ruining it by mixing, but with just a splash of coke, having a good rum like this makes a huge difference over mixing with some garbage like Bacardi.

It wasn't cheap, but not too expensive either. I paid about $22 for a fifth. I honestly don't know that I can go back to drinking Cruzan, or even Appleton or Mt Gay.

I'm going to try the Flor De Cana 4 year and 5 year varieties next time and see how they compare. I think the 4 year was only about 15 bucks for a fifth.

Try the 12 its amazing, i'm saddened by the fact that i only got 2 bottles when i was at that duty free store and not more of them. for 22 each i should have known better
