What made it so awkward was 1) he maintained eye contact with the camera throughout, and 2) the water was so far away
 
The more he lied, the thirstier he got. Unbearably so. Its tough for these minority Republicans. At least Jindal isn't to far away to offer a shoulder to cry on!
 
Just watched a short video clip of this - pretty funny. I'm guessing he didn't want to step off his "mark" as that would mean the camera having to adjust (which it ended up doing quickly anyways).

Why not make a thread? Any democratic politician who did something like this during a response to a republican president's SOTU speech would've been ridiculed as well.

because its pretty damn awful that this is the type of thing we talk about. But it was painfully awkward, yea I would've made fun of a Democrat too

I like how Drudge is comparing it to a normal drinking water at the podium scenario
 
It's a funny diversion, he should laugh it off as well... go on SNL and wear a water helmet and stuff. Completely insignificant but he might spin off some good natured name recognition.

I actually had a passing thought that it was intentionally bad/awkward. Especially if he goes on SNL. It's actually pretty good PR if played right

give an 11 minute speech without taking a break and report back how dry your mouth is.

the minority speech is always so awkward because it's just a guy standing in an empty room talking to the camera. I don't know why they even do them.

Joe Scarborough had good advice this morning... if anyone ever asks you to give the minority response to the State of the Union, just say no.

Rubio is a flat out hypocritical "empty suit", spouting the same BS that were the same talking points Romney used during his campaign.

Here he says, during his speech that he utilized student loans that helped him get to where he is now, and his parents are on social security benefitting, yet he wants to pull the ladder up from below and not allow others to have the same opportunities he had. In addition, his so called "middle class" neighborhood, is an upper class neighborhood, with home prices between 500,000 and a million dollars.

He gave that speech like some amatuer high school kid, he was choking on his own dry words, and knew that he was lying through his teeth, just pandering to his own base. He is not bringing anything new to the republican party, nor is he doing anything to repair the problems with the republican party.

Exactly, and these "teapukes" are killing the republican party. I guarantee you the republicans will lose some governors when the gubernatorial race comes up in 2014, and they can kiss any hope of gaining the presidency back if they continue this pathetically stupid course. Just makes me sick..they are running the good republicans out and replacing them with "clowns".

I thought it was terribly awkward, but yea still something that can be laughed off.

I can see it causing problems if it gets spoofed too much. I saw a really good one (sorry no link) where he was a nervous wreck and then fumbling for a bottle of water. If SNL does that it could be a negative, like he can't handle prime time

True. It certainly put a hold on Jindal's national ambitions a few years ago.

This week's Time magazine's cover article is about Rubio, with the cover asking literally if he is the Republican Savior. I think that's similar to the Sports Illustrated curse of the cover.

BTW how did Randie Paul do? He was supposed to give the teaparty's response to the SOTU speech.

I can report. After a speech of 10-14 mins I have no problems whatsoever. It's only when you start hitting 25-30 mins that you really need water. Especially if you're wise enough to hydrate before speaking, 11 minutes shouldn't be difficult, at least not in my opinion.

But yeah, awkward speaking situation. I wouldn't like it at all. Seems like a big deal to be offered it, but it doesn't seem especially helpful for the future aspirations of the person giving the address.
