Yes! Its called sins of a solar empire. I would recommend imperium galactica II also but its so old... and might not work etc. Sins is great though, theyre making an expansion for it with a full single player campaign, which is deserved considering the interesting story they set up for each race. Theres no campaign in the original game but its a bit like civ in that its still fun without one, no copy protection either so you wont get ripped off if you try to reinstall the game or anything.

This and in a weird way X3: Reunion. It's a free form space sim, but you can get fleets of ships to command and modify then send into battle. There isn't much micro-managing, but you can give squad commands and such. You can also jump into your own ship or pilot one of the computer-controlled ones via remote. The space battles are a relatively small part of the game unless you go into enemy territories to initiate them.

Why?

Probably because it is fairly addicting but it takes up so much time to beat large maps.

What is EAW anyway?

How about Star Trek Armada? Also, Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is a good shout but lacks base building, looks fantastic too.

Empire at War.

Nexus is really good.
I still think the Homeworld series is the best. It has exactly what space fans were hoping for in an RTS: Hundreds of ships, epic story, and so much action it makes you pee your pants.

The combat mode in Imperium Galactica 2 was good, but if thats all you needed it was a pain to go through all the planet building first.

I didn't like the game that much, but I wouldn't go that far. It is a slow paced RTS, where you can play a semi relaxing game. Not at all like most RTS's that require quick thinking and acting. It is more of a slow build kind of game. I mainly didn't like it that much because it had no campaign, which made it hard to get into it.

That being said, it is the only Space RTS I have played other than Starcraft. I wonder why there aren't more of them, considering that they should be easier than a ground based one because there are no obstacles to have to worry about when programing AI and route planning.

That's because you're not playing the REAL Sins game.

The REAL Sins game is NOT single player against computer AI. The real Sins game is online multiplayer against human opponents. Most online games are resolved within an hour-and-a-half (say a 3v3 on the large random single star map) unless you end up playing the large random multistar or the huge random multistar or a large-scale free-for-fall (FFA). Once it becomes clear that one team is going to lose, the losing players say "gg" and quit the match, which brings up the victory screen so there's no need to fight it out to the last few planets.

My advice: Create an account with Ironclad Online and read the Sins Strategy and Multiplayer forums: http://www.SinsofaSolarEmpire.com

I agree that the game could use a single player campaign, not because the game actually needs a single player campaign but because so many players who've never contemplated playing a game in online multiplayer seem to request it. For those who really want a campaign, I recommend just playing through the standard maps that came with the game and then downloading Galaxy Forge-made custom maps (as opposed to "Map Designer" maps).

It's not an issue for me because I couldn't imagine playing the game in single player against the unimaginative AI; there's just con comparison to the amount of intensity and intrigue that comes from playing against a live human opponent.

So come join the online Sins community! We need more people to play the game online! Most of the online Sinners are pretty friendly and would be happy to help out a newbie. Also, consider the social aspects of participating in the Sins discussion forums and of playing online. You'll probably make new friends and enjoy using teamwork online.

Try playing the game in online multiplayer and try using a "slow build" strategy and watch what happens...

I can get bored with the game near the end if some fool on the losing team insists on dragging it out to the last planet (normally a noob who doesn't know when it's over and when to quit) but otherwise I find it pretty suspenseful and compelling. Even early on before anyone's encountered their opponent, I still find it interesting to watch as my and my teammate's scout ships reveal the map and we can begin to contemplate strategy.

An hour and a half is by no means a fast paced game. Most regular RTS games last in the span of 20 to 30 minutes for regular battles. I think it's pretty ridiculous that the game requires people to pretty much quit and give up when they are about to lose. In any other RTS, most people would fight till the very last unit is gone.

Yeah, I suppose so, but I'm guessing that most people can put an hour-and-a-half into a game. Sins doesn't require that anyone quit; it's just that people do quit once it becomes obvious that they're going to lose. At that point the players on the winning team are just going through the motions of finishing off the losers.

I beat hundred of people in Red Alert within 20 minutes. Warcraft 2, the first RTS game I played, usually had matches of less than an hour as well. C&C was even faster paced than WC2, where I could win in 5 minutes at times (if they opponent didn't defend adequately against some of the faster ways to wipe out an enemy.)

I actually like that I don't need to babysit all of my units at all times in Sins like I did in the afforementioned games (which are what I played back in Highschool, before I went to College and had no time to play and got away from RTS's in the process.) But I now need a story line to draw me in. Gameplay by itself will not hold my interest for long, especially if it is complicated and requires a lot of work to truly understand.

Another vote for Homeworld ... but the original Homeworld only. The game was amazing and was considered the game-of-the-year for 1999. The graphics, the gameplay and the musical score were just amazing for the time and are still very good 9 years later.

I am a huge fan of Homeworld 1 & 2, especially HW1. The storyline, voice acting, graphics and control system keep you playing until you say "Man, I should have gone to bed 3 hours ago!". As far as Homeworld 2 goes, after you've played through it, I would recommend you try the Tactical Fleet Simulator mod. It really is quite amazing and completely changes the gameplay.

And as an added bonus, THQ (which owns the original developer, Relic) repurchased the rights to the Homeworld franchise from Vivendi back in September 2007. The only reason I can imagine is that they would like to release a third installment in the Homeworld series.

Have you played Starcraft? Plenty of games end under 20 minutes.

There could be a reason I put starcraft much lower on the list of RTS than most :)

starcraft is not a space RTS, there are no space only battles.
