- Mass Effect 2 has the same "multiple choice answers" as Dragon Age, so it seems questionable to list that as a major flaw in DA when you also state you loved ME2. If it's the combat system (turn based RPG vs. real time shooter) that is the real differentiator then I would suggest you aren't looking for a RPG as much as you are looking for a shooter with RPG characteristrics ala ME2. Borderlands is a really good shooter with RPG underpinnings if you can find a friend to play it with.

- You don't need to pause Dragon Age to be very successful on normal difficulty with any class and group makeup. The key is to figure out the tactics system and with a little effort you can work out a pretty good tactics system for every role in the game besides perhaps rDPS AoE damage. Google "Dragon Age tactics" + class for examples.

- There's nothing wrong with being hard to please but calling a game bad simply because you don't personally like it is silly. Anybody who has played as many games as the people on this subforum have should be able to tell the difference between a game that they don't simply don't enjoy and a bad game.

I wouldnt call ME2 a typical RPG - it had some RPG elements, all right..but i had fun playing it nevertheless. YES - also ME2 had a major flaw: I was baffled how quick i beat it on "normal". I think i never ever beat a game that fast as ME2.

Can anyone recommend a good sandbox style rpg where the mobs don't level with you? I'm not a fan of the more linear rpgs and I really hated how the enemies leveled with you in Oblivion. The best example I can think of is a game like WoW but single player.

I'd say Fallout 3. It levels with you, after a fashion, but IIRC it locks in an area at the level you first enter it.

I suppose there's also Morrowind, depending on whether or not you can tolerate that the game mechanics are broken left and right.

The GAME mechanics are pristine, and far superior to Oblivion in every way.
The PHYSICS suck balls, and the graphics are so far behind Oblivion the average player may have trouble going backwards.

Mount and Blade: Warband is about as open-world/sand box as I have played. It is not a fantasy type world however (no magic or fantastical creatures).

The others I can think of are either very old, or have already been mentioned.

The Witcher is actually somewhat sandbox, and the enemies will not level with you. But it has limitations with that sandbox, and is broken up into chapters/acts.

This is a good recommendation. I dislike most games but thought Oblivion was fun-ish for a while.. then it got old. Fallout 3 was much more immersive with the side quests and all, and leveling up actually felt like leveling up- Oblivion's leveling up was barely noticeable. OP, try Fallout 3

FWIW. I played Oblivion and Morrowind and really did not like them. Tho at the time i think it was because at the time i was too hooked on EQ and those games felt too much like EQ and i was missing guild/world chat too much :)

Loved Gothic 1 and 2. Fallout 3 was a blast to play. Great story i thot. Loved using the sniper rifle. Seeing those poor Rebels running around in a panic because they cant see where the shots are coming from and they just saw their buddy come apart :)
Some of the shots i could only see them in the scope.

One of the reasons i am reading here is i am inbtwn games now. i feel so lost :)
Tried playing Lotro for a couple of months but while game looks great and its just not something that i can get into. EQ1 i went back to for a few months but bored now. EQ2 ..same.

oh - i should mention Dragonage. I played that and enjoyed it (also played NWN2) i liked the story and choices. Was nice playing a RPG for a change instead of the graphix is everything FPS type.

Almost got Bioshock 2 on the weekend but from what i have read its too much of a FPS/twitch game. True or no? I loved that old game System Shock, is it similar to that game?

Blintok, you should try Mass Effect 1 & 2. It took me a couple few starting ME1 over a couple year period, but once I got into it I was hooked.

Just download the mod for Oblivion that makes it so the monsters don't level with you. There's a whole bunch of Oblivion mods at http://www.tesnexus.com

:EDIT: I believe this mod is what you're looking for. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3063

I don't understand why anyone can hate oblivion

I can.
It doesnt have nearly the free-from depth of Morrowind but its too open for most game players. It appealed to a wide variety of console players who dont expect much from their RPG's but it split the computer gaming community. People either wanted a more strict campaign and straight story line, or something even more involved than any other RPG to date.
The good news is, with mods you can pretty much have the game you want.

I thought Vanilla OB was a pretty shoddy game. There was no point to it, and the mechanics were terrible. Not to mention the underwhelming fine details...

Good thing the modding community is so active.

I think Oblivion has a LOT going on what makes it (almost) perfect...although with some flaws like those constant loading screens.

But for a game so old i am amazed how good it looks and how well everything "fits together" to make a good RPG.

There are several criteria which personally think are very important, and VERY FEW games get this right:

1) A balanced set of "sandbox mode" and storyline. Freedom to do things you want.
2) Character APPEARANCE (!), skills etc. customization
3) Loading times/Loading screens <--
4) Voice acting / Communication with NPCs
5) Day/Night cycles, weather etc...
6) graphics engine (RPGs are notorious to often feature the shi**iest graphics engines)
7) fight/battle system
8) ?

and so on...

Start with Risen. (There's a demo! Imagine that!) If you love that, check out the older Gothic collection. All of these are open worlds that PUNISH you if you go somewhere you shouldn't be. (And it's a thrill when you barely squeak by a tough enemy for the first time) Awesome atmosphere. One thing to keep in mind, the concept of the game is you start off meek as a kitten, so don't be discouraged right away when you can't fight very well. Sticking with it pays off.

I kinda like the easy-mode trend of modern RPGs, as having kids definitely puts a damper on my gametime, but there's something to be said for games that are tough-as-nails, but fair...

No. No, the ridiculously backwards "To get most gain out of your levels, you need to behave in a way opposite the class you selected" leveling system was directly inherited from Morrowind. And alchemy? Oblivion had plenty of issues, but you couldn't use Alchemy to become a god before leaving the first town. Oh and dialogue? Oblivions was pretty bad, but Morrowind didn't have dialogue, it had wikipedia NPCs.
