my router can't pick up ip settings from cable modem. i've had the router for a few months.

when i hook up the ethernet cable directly from pc to modem, it works.

when i hook up the ethernet cable from router to modem, the router can't seem to pick up the ip settings from the cable modem, so my internet doesn't work. any ideas?

Log onto the router and look around for a button "Clone MAC".

If you can't find one, go to a DOS prompt on your PC and type IPCONFIG /ALL and get your NIC's MAC address.

Then go back to the router and find someplace where you can type it in.

"Sometimes" cable companies don't like you "switching PCs"... ;)

you prob didnt need to do it before because it only checks the "pc's" mac address when a new ip is being assigned. This happens routinly.

btw you can call the provider and have them add the routers mac address to the account. just tell them its a new computer that is in the house tmeporarily and they will keep both mac addresses active.
