Whatever happened to East St. Louis? I know that USED to be considered probably the worst place to live for a number of reasons, only one of which was the murder and crime rate.

That list is a total joke. Metro Atlanta is so damn big now that labeling the whole thing as the second most dangerous city in the US is very misleading. Granted, there are parts of the city that I wouldn't venture into without body armor, but most of Atlanta is actually pretty safe.

Holy crap, LA is safer than Sacramento!

They don't go into small towns. There's a few that are perfectly safe if you're a local, if not you're at risk. (ie: towns w/ double and triple digit populations)

A couple weeks ago I had a drunk apparently non-union lumper jump on my truck at a stoplight on Bruckner Blvd. in the Bronx. Cost me a pack of Newports to get him off. Parked on the street over on Craven St. 'cause I didn't have the money to park at Hunt's Point. Sat in my truck from 11:00 p.m. 'til 6:00 a.m. staring in my side-mirrors and saw only one person the whole night and that was a woman apparently drunk or drugged and she wanted a cigarette but I, of course, had none. Guess I got lucky, but still got out of there as soon as I was unloaded (had a load of beef) only to have another fella' jump in front of my truck in Jersey. It's always good to get back down south.

Over the last decade plus, I've worked at night and alone in a lot of these areas, so it's a reasonably informed opinion when I say that parts of the South Bronx and North Philly are more far dangerous than Camden, NJ -- No. 3 (right accross the river from Philly) as a whole.

It's just that there's little else left in Camden to balance out the bad. I can also tell you that if statistics for Chester, Pa had been included, it would have ranked as even worse than Camden, 'cause there's just nothing else left, and the cops there DO run scared, with good reason.

I also wonder how many of you not from the Northeast realized how funky parts of Charm City (Baltimore - No. 4) are.

Finally, Trenton, NJ (No. 39) is a walk in the park compared to any of these other places.

I lived in Atlanta (#2) until 1996. It was pretty much like the above description of the Bronx - totally lawless, gangbangers, crackheads and bums everywhere. Just about everyone I knew carried a gun. I thought it had gotten safer in the last few years; I guess not. That's a pity. It's a great city in a lot of ways.

Where the hell did you live? I have lived in Atlanta for over three years now and I can tell you that I don't see that everyday.

New York isn't really that bad...I live in the projects, and it's GREAT! :p I've heard of rougher places in Miami, California and Chicago.

Most of the time I lived in Little 5 Points and Poncey-Highlands. It was especially bad in the early 90's during the recession. It was pretty amazing - people were stealing things you wouldn't believe, like the spray guns from self-service car wash hoses, or the copper wiring from inside the streetlights. I hear they've cleaned that area up since the Olympics. I haven't been back, so I don't know.

Come to Fresno, CA if ya want your car stolen. I heard from a friend that it was at the top of the list for GTA per capita in California if not the nation.
