My hair was very red in Junior High but I was never called names. Being captain of the girls softball team may have had something to do with it. :D

I don't think its racist but I do find it a bit offensive.

As an asian american myself I too find that quite offensive. IMO its not racist in that she didn't intend on offending anyone, but that type of humor should still be avoided.

what kind of humor? Making fun of someone's accent? get real.

From your perspective, you don't find that offensive because you don't speak the language and the racial aspect isn't directed at you.

From my perspective, I do find it offensive because I do speak the language and the racial aspect is directed at me.

Its all about perspective.

It's just revealing your inferiority complex, that's all. When I see non-white people make fun of whites, if the joke is funny, I'll laugh. I'm not constantly living in a state of hypersensitivy about my identity. I don't have an inferiority complex.

You need to get over it, as you just sound like a wuss.

White people know nothing of racism because they've never experienced it. Thus, they should STFU when it comes to such issues that they know nothing of. Its like trying to analyse football when you've never played or watched the game.
ummm.... you don't know that.

Nice response. Can't really debate this can you?
i didn't want to get into it because his ASSumption was ridiculous.

If i have to get into to appease YOU i will say I have lived in areas that were predominantly black and i have felt the scorn of racism from those around me.
You want more details? PM me. I don't wish to get into it on this board.

Just a point:

Language is not inherent. How can making fun of a language be racist? Language is not a race.

If she made fun of German would that be racist? How about Russian? French?

Sorry, folks, but your language and culture are not inherent, therefore making fun of them is not "racist."

she has probably experienced what I'd call "personal racism" - i.e., hostility directed towards her from classmates, neighbors, etc. due to her race.

I'd agree that white people are perhaps unlikely to experience racism directed against them of the type where the racist bias is built into the institutions of society or the way society operates.

what exactly do you think is being directed at you? Do you really think Rosie ODonnel thinks less of you because you are of Asian background? She has probably experienced abuse from other people all her life over her weight and lesbianism, so I doubt she is going to turn around and think less of someone because they are Asian.

I said the racial aspect of her joke, not her comment itself, was directed at me.

My apologies.

Firstly, looking back now I shouldn't have said Rosie's comment offended me. Her intent wasn't to offend.

Secondly, everyone has a different tolerance for "being offended", depending on what was said and their background, race, age... etc. I will not assume that my own tolerance is fitting of everyone else and I hope you do the same.

Thirdly, lets end this argument with a quote from Dr. King.

?Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.?

I obviously haven't experienced the discrimination you've faced but I was merely mimicking the stance that alot of posters are taking by calling those who are offended crybabies and pussies. I apologize for the you calling people pussies comment, that was someone else. You do, however, call those that are upset about this cry babies.

If you've felt discrimination at the scale that minorities have, then you have something to relate to. The only thing I've heard was that you were called volcano in school and that you've grown up in a predominantly black neighborhood. That's really not the same as a minority facing institutionalized racism.

it was belittling and mean-spirited.

i don't consider myself easily offended, but the whole "ching-chong" mock is something that generally pisses me off, even when it's not directed at me.

for someone who calls out other people in television (the whole kelly ripa incident), she should learn how to STFU.

How did you get teased or made fun of for being gay when you were young? Have you ever seen someone trying to be funny and unintentially did something to remind you of this? This is a bad example but imagine a comedian imitating how "fags" flail their arms when being tripped. Would it be funny if this was the main tactic people used to make your life miserable when you were growing up?

I am Chinese and I have said I do not think it was racist but this type of humor makes me uncomfortable because it brings back a lot of memories. If she had used real Chinese words, I would have found it hilarious (for example, Chris Tucker trying to speak Chinese in Rush Hour on the plane at the end) but the fake "ching chong ching chong" makes me cringe. The only time people have used that on me in real life is when they were trying to make fun of or hurt me.

But yes, in general, I'd say things may be too PC these days but still, it will do you well to think about multiple perspectives before mocking people.

Also, the difference between Rosie and other comedians is that other comedians no it's an uncomfortable topic and will typically start with jokes about their own race so that the intention is clear that it's not to mock the people of that joke but to mock the stereotypes.

Silly ATOT posters. Come on now.
eh, it's not totally the same, but it's still alike in that we were both picked on as children and only i have gotten over it and realized it was childish.

i think it's frickin STUPID for anyone to be offended by Rosie over this, but then you can take just about anything anyone says and someone can look to get offended over it.
society full of entitled crybabies has bred that.

Making fun of someone because of their red hair is being childish. But this disappears in the adult world because a lot of guys find women with red hair to be hot so it's easy for you to get over it.

But what about the asian man world? When white women find me hot is the day I will be willing to let go of being bothered by hearing "ching chong ching chong" directed at me.

I do see comedians adopting 'gay voices' or mannerisms on television several times a week. Even the liberal comedian everyone seems to love (Daily Show guy, John Stewart) does it. I think it is in bad taste, but choose to ignore it. I guess I don't think there is much point in getting overly upset about that kind of "humor". For the most part, there is no malicious or hateful intent behind the "joke".

I can appreciate what you are saying. I suspect Rosie would be horrified if she knew her "joke" had caused offence to Asian people. I don't see her as a person who would be deliberately cruel or make jokes by belittling other people. Maybe Asian people will take her aside and let her know that words like "ching chong" are culturally loaded with negative baggage for many Asian Americans.

This reminds me of when my chinese friend got upset over another friend of mine doing one of those ching chong mocks jokingly, he said he meant no harm & was joking. But another time when my chinese friend mocked the same guy back jokingly in a redneck country voice (since he has a southern accent) he got upset as well. So yeah, it depends. I don't think it's racist, but I can see why people can find it offensive.

But did a lot of German/French/Russian Americans (that had no accent) get made fun of with people speaking fake German/French/Russian at them with distorted faces?

That's the difference. Squinting your eyes, protruding your teeth and saying "Ching Chong Ching Chong" was the main tactic used on us when people were making fun of my race.

A German/French/Russian guy with no accent would not be made fun of. Because you guys all pass off as white. But a Chinese guy with no accent will still be made fun of in this way.

I don't think its racist but I do find it a bit offensive.

As an asian american myself I too find that quite offensive. IMO its not racist in that she didn't intend on offending anyone, but that type of humor should still be avoided.

what kind of humor? Making fun of someone's accent? get real.

You're right, that is a bad example. Robin Williams and shows like Will & Grace made a lot of people laugh "making fun of" gays and the way they talk and flail their arms.

What people are missing is the CONTEXT of the statement. Have some of you even watched the video?

I don't see her as a person who would be deliberately cruel or make jokes by belittling other people. Maybe Asian people will take her aside and let her know that words like "ching chong" are culturally loaded with negative baggage for many Asian Americans.

There's a saying: "Check your baggage at the door"

Nobody knows your past, and nobody wants to deal with all of your baggage. You're better off letting it slide. Many of these people have baggage over events that they didn't even experience. They just read about it and thought that it would be cool to act offended all the time.

My suggestion to them is to stop crying. Nobody wants to hear about their inferiority complexes.

"Irish need not apply." "Dago," "Mick," "WOP," "Kraut," "Frog," "Redneck," "White trash," "Honkey," "Cracker," etc.

Sorry, this is wrong. Language and culture are not only inherent, they're integral. There's not a lot of multi-language cultures out there.
And practically all racism is not racism at all, but culturism.

This is about as ignorant as it gets. You're pretty much saying, "let's forget history." No one should ever offended because your baggage needs to be checked at the door. Obviously, the world hasn't learned enough from history as we have comedians like Kramer bursting racial slurs in comedy clubs with malicious intent. I guess those men should've just checked their baggage at the door and just laugh at the world's wonderful racism.

EVERYONE wants to play the race card these days. Thank God I live in a small town.

Yea living in a small town in North Carolina prob helps cause you're ALL racist
