he just upgraded his dell 8200 to a 9800 pro. he has 3 hard drive spinning up 7200rpm and 2 optical drive. On top of that, he has 4 pci cards installed. I was trying to help him out by putting artic silver 3 on his stock cpu since he's complaining that his computer run hot. Here's the kicker, his PS is only 250 watts total.well, he said he's going to clean of the grease i put on there. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. I also told him he needed to upgrade his PS since the 9800 pro uses a lot of power.

oh yeah, after i beat him in doom3, guess he's complaining since he lost.

I am using one right now. It is my back up card because my 9600XT was RMA'd. It is acceptable for everyday stuff, but don't try playing any real games on it.

Good news is my 9600XT is back and is waiting for me to pick it up tommorrow.

true, but if the current PSU is not able to handle the loads properly, a replacement will make things work better and more stable and may see a video improvement.

That's pretty heavy-duty man. Any Antec 350W would suffice.

when they start blaming you for anything, stop helping them. Be sure to drop lots of hints as to how you know what the problem is and it's an easy fix, but don't lift a finger to help. If they ask for help, just say "What, before you were saying I broke your computer...now you want me to work on it again? Why don't you take it in to the morons at Best Buy, let THEM look at it for $40/hr"

Too bad he can't upgrade his PS since the 8200 uses the special dell-only molex connector.

Edit: his PS is probably around 300 since Dell rates theirs at the mean instead of the high.

He could get the pinout and rewire, but judging by his level of computer expertise I doubt that would work out to well.

Alternatively, he could buy the standard to Dell molex adaptor.

It was INCREDIBLY stupid of Dell to use the same connector for a proprietary power supply pinout. Doesn't that violate some primary common-sense rule of engineering?
