I had a female roommate once. Worst person to live with ever. She was always cold, so in the summer she put the AC on 80 fucking degrees and 78 degrees for heat in the winter. She constantly left her clothes in the washer/dryer and left for the day. I would often take them out so I could do my own laundry and then put them back when mine finished. She came home once to find her clothes on the counter and mine cleaning (after she had left hers in the machines for 8 hours) and took my wet clothes out and through them into a pile of cans she and her cousin stacked on the floor.

The walls in our apartment were thin and I could hear through them. She was always in her cousin's bedroom playing around--and I heard them having activities on more than one occasion. Later they were marked as "In a relationship" with each other on Facebook. Disgusting redneck farmers. They also wanted me to wash their dishes as a turn, even though I washed all my own dishes as soon as I finished with them. They actually left our double sink full of pots, pans, and dishes for five weeks with a note saying it was my turn to wash them. (I had even washed their dishes on the prior rotation because my parents were visiting.)

My third roommate had his girlfriend over every day. She was just as bad, if not worse. She and her boyfriend (my actual roommate) used up rolls of my toilet paper and never bought any of their own. Once a month or so he would bring in a roll he stole from some bathroom. After a few months I left all my toilet paper in my locked room. (I'm so glad we had keyed locks.) They became pissed at that and kept insisting it was my turn to buy toiletries. I never did, and they never had toilet paper.

The two of them had sex every day and were really loud and annoying about it. I had to hear, "Josh, Don't. Stop it Josh. That hurts. Let me do it," every fucking day. She was also very loud in general, and I had to listen to her Fran Dresher voice as she whined about the stupidest shit all the time. The two of them fought all the time and destroyed parts of our apartment and tried to blame me. She even kicked a hole in his door at one point. I thought about throwing a piece of fish into the hole before I left the apartment for good--as he was staying the next year--but I opted against it as it was also hurting the apartment company.

The girlfriend also goaded her boyfriend into doing things against me, including throwing trash against my bedroom door and sweeping up dust under the door into my room. I hated those fuckfaces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since they used my dishes and kettles, about a month before I left I took all those belongings to my room so that had nothing to cook with or eat on. They both threw a fit about me doing that.

The final straw occurred after the fuck-buddy cousins left. They flooded the bathroom and used all my towels to sop up their shitty mess. Then they went into the kitchen and, once again, she goaded him into moving my baking soda from the freezer into the fridge. I put a note on it because they kept doing so after I asked them to stop. I heard a slam and heard them laugh and then leave. I went to get something from the fridge and saw all the wet towels in the bathroom. Then I checked the freezer/fridge and the baking soda had moved. Fuck them, I thought. I ran from the apartment and started yelling at the roommate and his girlfriend. I told them to "leave my fucking stuff alone." About ten minutes later, they stormed back into the apartment and started trying to yell and intimidate me. I was about 1 foot taller than him and much larger. I explained that day's issues and they denied it. (Like a ghost moved the baking soda.) Then the girlfriend claimed I plugged the bathroom that morning. (I didn't use it that day, liars!) I held my hand up to her face and said that I was talking to my roommate, not her. That was the best feeling I ever had.

I have 1 girl and 1 guy roommate. I'm great friends w/ the girl roommate and I don't think I could ask for a better one. She's very clean which is great compared to my guy roomie who doesn't rinse his dishes off or help clean the kitchen. Now I know not all girls are like my roommate and many can be bitchy or too much of a neat freak but from what I've experienced they're great. I have nothing bad to say about her, except maybe she goes to sleep kinda early sometimes so my buddies can't play rock band as long as we intend... but it's not an issue.

This is my second year living with only girls. Last year it was 3, this year it's 2 other girls.

Best decision I ever made about my living situation, seriously. The bathroom is clean, and they keep the kitchen and living room clean enough to guilt me into doing the same, though my room is still a constant war zone. It helps that none of them are super girly, so there isn't makeup and other cluttery-type things all over the place. It's also pretty crucial that we're all very good friends- there's no (okay, very little :)) sexual tension. They're basically like my sisters, we talk about each other's love lives without any awkwardness.

Otherwise, it's pretty much just like living with guys- it helps that we all like relatively similar music, are pretty considerate of each other's personal space, are laid back about all the asinine stuff that you always hear roommates fighting about, etc. If you're the type of person who can have mature, stable platonic relationships with the opposite sex, you'll be fine.

You definitely want to avoid sex if you're not willing to move out on zero notice- I don't have any personal experience with this, but I can imagine how hellish it could get if (when) things went downhill.

But yeah, I totally recommend it.

Why? What's wrong with a little physical play every now and then? Society's taboo on sex is so old school ...

You do realize his post has nothing to do with sex being a taboo and everything to do with the situation turning into a complicated mess of a relationship, right?

If you see sex as physical play, then nothing is complicated. It's that simple.

I doubt this situation has ever really happened. But hell, if you luck out, take full advantage, I say.

I see all these postings (for roommates) on craigslist where the poster says that they don't care if their roommate is male or female. To me, that's almost like saying, "I don't care whether or not we have sex."

Weak.

Anywho, I used to have two female roommates (Three's Company style) and there were no real issues aside from me having to pick up the peridodic feminine hygiene product; no worries though as it prepared me for marriage.

it depends on the person. Bad roomates can be male or female. Go visit where they live currently that will tell you everything you need to know.

Three's Company showed that this is a great living arrangement. Only, you have to pretend you're gay.

I've had female roommates a couple of times. Not a big deal. The bathroom was a little more cluttered, however the place was always cleaner.
Fair tradeoff in my opinion.

i had 2 female roomies back in the day, and all that was worth it when they walked around in short shorts and tank tops. they also tended to clean the main living areas more often.

I had two female roommates through the majority of college; one was an ex-girlfriend, the other was (and still is) a current girlfriend. We had essentially no secrets between us. In the summer, we had naked apartment, in the winter we'd all huddle up together on the couch or in bed. We had a couple of sexual encounters, no awkwardness around it though. By far the best living arrangement I have ever had, and probably will ever have, unless I manage to inherit the Playboy mansion.

That said, if there is even an ounce of sexual tension between you, things will turn out very, very poorly. It's a delicate balance.

I've had female roommates in college and they are no different than guys if you treat them that way. If you have some romantic feelings towards them, then it could be trouble. Actually, one semester, I roomed in a house with four rooms and a large den converted into a bedroom, and I had four female roomates. It was interesting, since after a while, I became an adopted "gal" and was non-threatening and they would walk around with just T-shirts and panties on. I didn't think much of it, but my friends who would visit would sh*t in their pants on the sight of seeing a pretty coed come out of her room at 1:00 AM to get a drink and she wouldn't be wearing much. I had a good time and learned a lot about females during that experience. One interesting thing was that females in a enclosed environment tend to fight more than guys in a similar situation. One of my good roomie female buddies told me that "girls are bigger bitches than you realize", and I laughed pretty hard at that. You'd think that guys would get into each other's business and fight, but there is more involved with women it seems.

She was living in a single room with three other individuals. One of them was a male and the other two, well, the other two were females. God only know what they were up to in there. And furthermore susan, I wouldnt be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them habitually smoked marijuana cigarettes... reefers

I don't think it's a big deal at all. I've lived with girls on three different occasions, inclding right now. I have been lucky in that they tend to be clean. Much more so than my guy roommates.
