I'm a big Total War fan- started with Rome, played Medieval II and Empire (skipped Shogun II as the setting didn't interest me). I want to play Rome II, but is it actually working yet? Have they patched out all the game breaking bugs, made the diplomacy AI a bit less shambolic, etc- the usual bugs with a Total War game? Or should I wait a few more months for them to fix the rest of the bugs?

I think it's very playable right now and there's also a mod community through the Workshop on Steam, if you can find a deal on it it's worth a buy.

I have been playing the recent patch version from the start again. I haven't yet seen the AI do anything completely ridiculous on the battlefield like before, and by this point in the campaign I am normally laughing at how bad it is. But I need to do a proper fortification siege before I can tell if its really been fixed or not. As to the other aspects of the game like MP and such I haven't checked yet. So cautiously I am starting to play it.

I think the game is finally what what it should have been at release, if not slightly bettter. With patch 9, the campaign AI is good if not great (diplomacy is the best of any TW game thus far IMO).

The battle AI is decent. It tends to do well in regular battles and non-walled seiges. It is ok when it comes to walled sieges. Sometimes it acts intelligently, and much less frequently does it act stupidly than before. I'd say seiges are no longer broken, but not quite ideal yet. Thankfully there is at least one more patch due soon.

Some of the major MP problems have been fixed, but they are (presumably) still working on the rest.

If you're a fan of the TW series, definitely give it a go at this point. Mods also can really improve the experience. I'd say that with mods, its quite a good game as of now.

Too bad they really botched the release. It irreparably hurt the player base and franchise reputation.

Thanks for the response guys. Glad they finally fixed the campaign AI- the sheer stupidity in Empire really annoyed me.

With patch 9, it is pretty decent now.

However, the game will never be as great as it should be, IMO, because they decided to stick with the Warscape engine. The Warscape engine can depict ranged combat decently, but is really sub-par for close combat and unit formations. And there is no way to fix this.

Still huge amount of flaws. Specially AI siege flaws.

I think Rome 2 is a game that never gets fully fixed. And the devs looks not to care anymore.

Play Shogun 2 instead of you want a good game.

It will never be fully fixed I'm guessing. I got it when Patch 7 went in. I'd say its about as good as it will most likely get as far as CA fixes go. I think its up to the modding community now to get it where it should be. Its playable. It isn't worth $50 though. Catch it on a 50% or 75% sale. I like some of the new things but in some ways I think Rome 1 is better. CA should be deeply ashamed of what they did with Rome 2. No reason for the game to be so god awfully bad at release like it was. No excuse at all.

Its great now. Dont listen to the haters. All games of this scope feature bugs. Some were bad but they are MUCH better now.

Install the Radious mod and enjoy

I was far from the haters. It is still a great game but expect only a glossy RTW1, as that is all it is.

I like it better, but the time period plays a big part of that. While Shogun2 may have been one of the technically better games, the time period and geographic location was boring to me.

You're going to like Medieval 2 more if you like knights and castles and you're going to like Rome more if you like the classical time period up to the Medieval era.

any time period is fine

what i really like is the building selection. also the creative assembly seems much more publisher oriented today. so i wonder if they just put any less effort into making a great game and more into making sales. the food resource from shogun 2 seems interesting.

I bought it a couple weeks ago; it was crashy and glitchy until I updated my GPU drivers to the latest version. Haven't had any problems since.

Personally, Shogun 2 is worlds ahead of Medieval 2 when it comes to the campaign gameplay. Better mechanics, smarter diplomatic AI, better use of agents, better art style.

But Shogun 2 still feels weird when in the battle mode. There is no better word than that, something feels off like a CGI face from the uncanny valley. The video explains that this is due to the kill-moves only combat and the lack of collision for soldiers. Both are horrible flaws originating from Empire Total War's engine which kill any joy of watching combat up close.

Shogun 2 has a excellent campaign game about Sengoku Jidai but if you don't care about the Japanese part of this game, just play a Paradox game like Europa Universalis or Crusader Kings instead. Since Total War battles are not pure gold anymore and getting crappier by the game.

I thought it was fine when I completed my 80 hours campaign at launch...

Rome 2 has played great for me for a while. Some of the improvements in the campaign make campaign play more interesting over shogun.

I dislike some of the mechanics when trying to establish a very long line and the ai goes all wtf!

Spear units take time to get used to and shields really make archers useless in most cases.
