Rome 2 has played great for me for a while. Some of the improvements in the campaign make campaign play more interesting over shogun.

I dislike some of the mechanics when trying to establish a very long line and the ai goes all wtf!

Spear units take time to get used to and shields really make archers useless in most cases.
Great mechanics like conquering one country at a time until you control the map? And the legendary broken Creative Assembly campaign AI that waits for its turn to get screwed?

what do you mean that spear units take a while to get used to?
Getting your spear units into position was a problem for me till I started using the formation options. The Phalanx was also bugged till patch 5 or so but works really well now.

sigh/

In previous games did you not conquer one thing at a time till you won? Am I missing something here? Campaign AI is much better and competitive in most factions though some still die early in the campaign as they were designed to do since those factions died off early historically.

Maybe you need to go play the older games since they clearly make you happier in their simplicity.

Hey, in the old Rome Total War, multiple factions can and do declare war on you. They also attack you, if not competently. But the illusion is there.

You can't say that for the new game. Or at least for me, the suspension of disbelief is not there.

You know what, it doesn't matter one bit if the campaign sucks or not. But the battle mechanics themselves are deeply flawed. That is the core of the game.

Don't mistake my complaining for something it is not. I care a lot about the Total war games, but seeing them go to **** is not cool.

For example, lets look at the Phalanx units. In the older TW games, this formation makes it hard for units to attack from the front. The spears are a physical obstacle that prevents easy access to the front of the unit. Yes, soldiers will die but that is not the main goal. Instead, the enemy unit is "fixed" into the fight.

Now in Rome 2, the Phalanx performs differently and ahistorically. The unit's spears are now a "kill-zone" where the enemy can freely go through but will suffer greatly enhanced causalties. The Phalanx will kill a lot more soldiers but will not fix the unit into combat. The spears are "invisible" effectively to the battlefield.

A thousand little cuts of death like this doom the sequel.

I agree with you on the spear and phalanx issues and mentioned them earlier. In my most recent campaign-running mods though- I was attacked by three factions at the same time same turn playing the iceni.

Play with the radious main mod and the gem shader and its a new game.

With your main point someone will fix the pathfinding issues if the dev wont eventually. Mods have always made these games more rewarding and historical or wild depending on your mood. They do dum down the game for mass appeal. I dont mind modding and so does the majority of the community. Hate on vanilla all you want. Lots of people are enjoying the game now.

Hey guys, I just bought this for 20 bucks through the steam sale, anyone want to try some co-op with me and teach me a few things. I'm usually pretty decent at these games but for some reason this is confusing the hell out of me. Everyone just says read the in game encyclopedia, but for some reason I can't even figure out how to build a navy fleet and attack over the water.

I think the navy battles are still broke, better to auto resolve them. You need to build the port upgrade to build ships, providing you can build a port for that territory.

Yeah so I tried to play through the prologue and start a campaign apparently there is a bug with the end turn button which I have I guess. They said it is a known bug being looked into, but it is causing me to be unable to play this game. Any chance of me getting a refund you think? This might rival the sim city release.
