RIP -- in any sort of recent memory, I have ignored most critic's reviews, however, his were always worth a look if I was truly interested in a movie. He seemed to be able to adjust his evaluation to the kind of movie itself, and was well-written and knowledgeable.

Here is part of The Village Review from wikipedia:

Roger Ebert gave the film one star and wrote: "The Village is a colossal miscalculation, a movie based on a premise that cannot support it, a premise so transparent it would be laughable were the movie not so deadly solemn ... To call the ending an anticlimax would be an insult not only to climaxes but to prefixes. It's a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It was all a dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore." The film is listed on Ebert's "Most Hated" list

RIP.

One of his best:
I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.

But for real, this saddens me. Being a Chicago guy and a movie lover, I always enjoyed his reviews and found my views aligning with his more than any other reviewer. Will miss the old guy.

🙁

I trusted, and tended to agree with his movie reviews above all other critics. One of the few critics who seemed capable of adjusting his expectations and knowing how to actually enjoy a movie for the experience.

RIP
This.

IDK, if it's just me but alot of newer movie critics seem to have rather unreasonable expectations sometimes.

Yes. Great way to describe his reviews, and why I think I always aligned with him.

Fvck cancer.

My fiancee's dad passed away from stomach cancer just last summer.

My college youth pastor passed away from cancer.

My HS reverend (amazing guy, even though I no longer beleive) lost his 13 year old son to bone cancer 9 years ago.

My wedding caterer told me he's going to his brother's funeral last Sunday. Throat cancer and it spread all over, left 2 teenage kids.

And he told me both of his parents died from cancer.

Fvck cancer.
