From CNN.com:

The Iraqi Information Minister claims that U.S. soldiers are distributing pens and pencils to the townspeople, but that they are boobytrapped to kill the children. LOL..

Yeah...and the Iraqis have shot down a lot of the cruise missiles and we all suffer illusions of having taken any towns or crossed any bridges.

Is this for real? Little tough to swallow, even knowing it's Iraq.

Oh well. That's OK, you'll get people posting and whining in this thread just to say that we've somehow got the same type of propaganda over here.

OMG, it just can't get any worse....

Now we drop pens and pencils hoping we can blowup little children

While they plot to bomb their own Mosques and holy cities so they can blame the evil Americans and British

and now this

Basra's last-stand militia using five-year-olds as human shields

JEANETTE OLDHAM

PRO-SADDAM Hussein militia in Basra are using children as young as five as human shields and threatening men with death if they do not fight for them, British troops revealed yesterday.

Sergeant David Baird, a tank commander, told Martin Bentham, a journalist with the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, that he had seen at least four or five children, aged between five and eight, being grabbed by the scruff of the neck and held by Iraqi fighters as they crossed a road in front of his tank.

He said he was "sickened" by the tactic adopted by the Iraqis who moments earlier had been firing rocket-propelled grenades at him.

Sgt Baird, 32, from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, who commands a Challenger 2 tank from C Squadron of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards battle group, said he was forced to halt any retaliatory fire because of the danger of killing the children.

"They [the militia] were crossing the road to try and outflank us on the left and as they crossed, four or five of them grabbed kids by the scruff of their necks and dragged them across with them," he said. "They were using them as human shields so that I had to stop firing.

"The children were only five to eight years old. There were lots of women and children there. It was a busy crossroads, but they didn?t seem to care.

"I am married with a son of nine months and I just felt disgusted. In this part of the world, it seems that life is not held in the same way as we regard it. It was terrible."

The incident happened during a battle on Sunday fought by Royal Marines and tanks from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards to the south of Basra which resulted in the capture of two Iraqi villages.

if they are defending that regime by using children as shields I don't care what they think, I only care that they cease to exist.

What good are pens/pencils when the city is shutdown due to the bombings?

Food/Water, bomb shelters, ear plugs, and body bags would be more appropiate at the moment.

maybe the prospect of free speech has some Iraqis excited and they want to jot down some ideas to remember them for later, when they can speak freely without getting executed.

possibly to give them a way to communicate discreetely with Coalition troops.....

don't forget it is entirely possible there are boobytrapped pens and pencils being tossed into the cities, would it suprise you to find out Saddam did something like this to fuel anti-US sentiment....

Not surprising that in a thread populated with ridiculous propoganda and 5-year-old children being used as cannon fodder, free pencils was the one thing that offended your sensibilities enough to warrant a response.

FYI those supplies are already there.....at least the food, medical care, water, body bags.....

The bomb shelters are full of Chirac's friends though, no room for the kiddies....

"Not to be outdone in making ridiculous claims, the Iraqi minister of dis-information claimed that U.S. soldiers are distributing pens and pencils to townspeople and they are boobytrapped to kill children.

This was thought to be in direct response to the Pentagons' ridiculous claim that "Saddam is the worst ruler in history."

The Pentagon could not be reached for comment, but doubtless they are hard at work to come up with something even more preposterous."

Stupid statements from the Iraqis:

"Victory is at hand" - Saddam says today (must be getting the straight dope from his generals *laugh*)
Pencils are the debbil's work - their view on writing implements dropped by coalition forces for the natives
coalition is using helicopters to vibrate shrine apart - you couldn't make this stuff up!
coalition victories are "illusions" - huh? perhaps we aren't even IN Iraq?
God bless those pagans! - the equivalent of the secular Saddam rousing support for a Holy War
the coalition effort is failing - well that is what Arnett told us anyway!

This guy lives in the land of make believe. The Ministry of Information (this guys f'n office) has been hit by 5+ cruise missiles. Apparently those are the ones that the "farmer peasants" failed to "shooted" down with their shotguns.
He is the absoloute worst PR person imaginable, his English is pathetic, his vocabulary comes from comic books ("the evil villians!!"), and he accuses every reporter of lying yet has kicked nearly every UNbiased (Al-JizHer doesn't count) out of Baghdad. Saddam must be dead, because he can't possibly be letting this moron stay around.

I sure hope the Iraqi's don't use our secret pencil bombs against our troops, because as they say, the pen(cil) is mightier than the sword.

Didn't you hear? This war is actually directed by Michael Bay, and is being shot in the beautiful deserts of Nevada. I think Jerry Bruckheimer is producing again after their success together on Pearl Harbor. The special effects are pretty damn good.

You're probably right, but English is the most universal language and should be the language your PR people are "talking to the world" with. Otherwise let the translators do the job for you.

I have some Iraq money, dinnars (sp?) plus some old kuwait money, it's the pre gulf war stuff, worthless now, just funny money
kids like to see and have odd money, so I always get a bunch of it and give it to the little ones back here
