Road Test: 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

I personally like the looks of them, & I think it's hilarious that the 0-60 time is lower than that of a last generation V6 Mustang.

Just too much grey plastic to me. Reminds me too much of the Aztek.

I like it. It's a lot of fun and functional. I took it camping last weekend....without a tent....with an air mattress....with a chick. 😀

Yeah baby!!

My brother-in-law bought one of these recently to haul things for the business he owns.

This is not an all weather truck.

When you extend the bed the cab is open to the elemets.

You wouldn't be able to have the back of the cab open in cold or real rainy weather.

If you took 2 off road motorcyles out and later it started raining, the muddy bikes would be right there in the open behind you on the trip home.

i agree with NFS4, it is fugly. how is the 02 different from the 01? looks like the same fugly POS to me.

<< When you extend the bed the cab is open to the elemets. >>

Not necessarily. If you keep the tonneau covers and back window on, its water tight.

<< how is the 02 different from the 01? >>

It's different because '01 is very rare, as in non existence. 😉

<< The plastic is body armor... Plastic is cheap to replace and strong... the day you kiddies have the money to buy a nice new truck and scratch up the medal 4x4'n you should go ahead and talk, but since you don't.... 😉

Anyway I'm still a Silverado/Sierra man myself 🙂
>>

Considering that I don't go "off roading," the plastic to me looks cheesy and ugly. Makes the damn thing look like a Tonka truck. I'd gladly take a '02 Silverado. Don't give me the '03 b/c they got Avalanched in the front-end styling!!:|:|:|:|

That's right. Guess how much a quarter panel is? How about $50!!!😀:Q And no new paint job required!!

My quarter panel is well over that and since GM parts are a little cheaper then Ford and Massive amounts cheaper then Dodge plus if you want some good Du-pont to go over thats another $900 to match the front end again if actually put to real use and not just driven around town it's a novel idea..

I built armor for my truck $120.... no it's nothing cheesy it's Vynil magnets but it's a pain to get out and put on and it's still at risk of damage

Here's a thought I just had. When I drive my convertible corvette, and it starts to rain, I put the top up! Wow! Who woulda thunk it?

Oh and you can have the back open in cold weather. The design of the truck maximizes the heat in the front part of the cab. I have done it. If I had 2 off road motorcycles, I would measure them and make sure that they were short enough to fit in the rear with the midgate up before I bought the SUT.

Dude they are stretch slamming... you're not allowed to involve logic like that, it stops the thread 😉

But -why- would you want a pickup that had to have it's 'top' put up to keep from getting rain in the cab? And I'm not going to go out of my way to measure everything I might want to carry -before- I buy an Avalanche.

Why not just get a regular pickup? If you want a back seat get an extended cab, or a crew cab if you're looking to carry that many passengers. At least that way you have the benefit of a full size bed without a big hole that you have to worry about covering up if you get into bad weather, or heaven forbid, want to park it at some point.

At best, the Avalanche is a niche vehicle like the Aztek. Some (few) people will really dig it, but I wouldn't count on getting much for resale if you don't intend to drive it into the ground.

<< Another vote for Fuglyness gimme a Toyota Tundra, Ford F150 or Tonka anyday. >>

the F-150 is sweet, the Tundra is a POS, my GF's parents have one, they take great care of it and it already needs a valve job like mad, least the Avalanch comes with a great engine, the Tundra has MUCH to desire.

Why would you even consider this truck if you don't go off-roading..

I think the buyers who buy trucks like these for their work/hobbie purposes don't really care about looks. Half the time, the truck would be covered in mud anyway and you wouldn't be able to tell the plastic from the metal, hell you won't even be able to see the actual body panels of the truck...

If its practical then its a good truck, who cares about the frigging looks!

In a midgate-up configuration, you don't get rain in the cab. It's exactly like a regular pickup.

BINGO, I've owned trucks ever since I turned 16, back then a Short box regular cab sufficed as I was only a 4 wheeler and didn't have a need to tow or carry many people and back then you could stuff 4 of us in the cab 😉,

Trucks and sport vehicles have been doing that for Decades.... Jeep, Blazer, Bronco..... it's nothing new to have an open area.

The features are nice, but you don't have to go offroading to enjoy those features (case & point, Cadillac Escalade EXT...you see one of those off-road, and I'll give you $50). I wouldn't mind something like the Avalanche if it WASN'T SO DAMN UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks play a big part in the decision to buy a vehicle that someone buys (it's also the reason why '94 Dodge Ram sales took off). If you don't think so, then look at the Aztek and its poor sales. And if something doesn't look pleasing to my eye, I won't buy it no matter how it good it is. And the day that I drive a vehicle around with mud slung all over it is the day that I sh!t my pants. I can't stand a dirty vehicle!!:|:|

If the Avalanche looked like a regular Silverado; I could get down with that, but this thing just looks like Lego trash. The Silverado Z71 is an off-road pickup, but it doesn't look like ass either.

Ok, so to summarize this thread, some people don't like its look. You got anything else? No?

I could easily come up with a list of things why it's appealing functionally.

The Aztek is quite appealing functionally...would you still buy one?
