(CNN) - The chairman of the Republican National Committee unveiled his latest attack on President Barack Obama on Sunday, comparing him to the captain of the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship.

When asked if the infighting in the GOP presidential primary race would harm the eventual nominee's chances against Obama in November, Reince Priebus said the party would unite by then in an effort to win the White House.

"In a few months, this is all going to be ancient history and we're going to talk about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama who's abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president," Priebus said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Priebus added the president is "fleeing the American people," just like Schettino allegedly fled his cruise liner.

The ship rolled onto its side in shallow waters off an island on Italy's Tuscan coast on January 13. Seventeen people are confirmed dead and 15 people remain missing while Francesco Schettino is under house arrest and faces possible criminal charges of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship.

Following the jab, CBS host Bob Schieffer seemed caught off guard by Priebus' comment, asking with a laugh: "What did you just say? What did you call President Obama?"

Priebus was defiant in his response.

"I called him Captain Schettino, you know the captain that fled the ship in Italy," Priebus said. "That's our own president who's fleeing the American people and not doing his job and running around the country and campaigning."

It strikes me as odd that the GOP would criticize Obama for campaigning. If he's done as bad of a job as president as they say he has, why would they not welcome him "leaving his post" to campaign?

Reince Prebus is a little troll. And they made an issue of Obama's name?? This guy sound like he was born on the planet Endor.

BTW - If you want to go the ugly analogy route and be more accurate, Bush would be in the role of ship captain. Obama would be the guy mounting the rescue. The GOP would be bitching that people drowned during Obama's rescue effort.

I am not defending his statement, but I do think the President should be working for the American people the entire time. He should simply point to his work and say "see, I made your lives better". No need to go out and promise to do things he could already be doing.

This applies to all incumbants seeking reelection.

EDIT: I have an issue with a Representative running for the Senate while ignoring his job in the House...and yet still taking the paycheck.

You're also not saying anything critical of it either. What do you think of it?

I can understand why a DNC partisan hack like youself would need others to come out and be critical of things a republican says (see, I can toss about the partisan hack line as glibly as you can)...

What he said is true, but it is true of all those seeking re-election to their current position. It was a meaningless jab, and quite silly.

If something major was happening which required Obamas full attention (such as the bombing of some Arab nation in northern Africa), then I would say his comment was useful and should have been made. But since nothing of the sort is currently happening, then it is fine for Obama to be out and about campaigning. It is part of the job.

Bah, I did it over 2 weeks ago, he's stealing my lines. It's a political move in an election year, big deal, put on your big boy pants and get over things like this.

Obama is leading this country like Schettino captained his ship.

I don't have a problem with it as much as it's confusing. When someone is doing their job badly, why would you complain when they're not there to mess things up more?

Yes you can, but no one else would believe it... unlike what I've said about you.

You are cute when you take yourself seriously. No one else does, why should you?

You ignore when I point out bad things about republicans so you can continue to post a lie about me due to me exposing you in your own thread as holding a double standard (one for you, one for everyone but you).

But you are funny in that village idiot sort of way...so it is all good. :)

Oh, and nice job editing out my answer...another example of you being dishonest.

EDIT: Woah, another out of order post. See post 11 to understand better.

My post wasn't directed at you, but to some of the replies you've gotten that were full of faux outrage. The RNC chair just wanted to be the first one to tie the name "Capt. Schettino to the President.

"Barack Obama Handles the Ship of State a Lot Like the Captain of the Costa Concordia" (Jan. 24)

DNC chair calls "Remarks likening Obama to cruise ship captain 'incendiary' "

Her brilliance and insight never cease to amaze me. I was actually surprised to see that she has another adjective besides "racist" in her vocabulary.

They'll bring out a editorial in a few days that will label it as "racist". In fact i'd bet on it.

I'll take that bet. What are the stakes?

To be specific, I will bet that no editorial in any mainstream publication will specifically label the RNC's comparison of Obama to Captain Schettino as racist. (basically by this I only mean no obscure blogs)

I'll say "wow, i was wrong, no one came out and called it racist"

small stakes I know.

How are you able to read the future and post about something I haven't even posted yet?
Didn't Perk say the forums would be fixed?

*edit* Let's give it a week.

Ok, what's the time frame? The next week? Two weeks? Things pass out of the national mind pretty quickly so I would say that if it is going to happen it will be in the next week. What do you think?

My ability to read your thoughts into the future is pretty amazing, huh? Doesn't it make you wonder what else I know about you?

EDIT: Look. I did it again. Better watch yourself.

What a dumb thing to say. Like Obama or not, he's done nothing akin to abandoning a ship run aground. He's not doing anything every incumbent does in every election, he's partially ignoring his real job to make sure he gets re-elected.

Dumb comparison IMO.

The usual stupid projecting from insecure repubs, I'm not surprised. Bush is a far better example of the Schettino fail than Obama, easily.

Yep, a horrible comparison that I would normally expect to hear from someone like whitey07 or some other sock puppet. Coming from the RNC chair it just seems like another addition to the pile of stupid the GOP has been building since 2009. It's all going to come crashing down on them too, and they're probably blame Obama for it, naturally.

Seriously, I haven't seen a party reek of desperation this much, ever.

The Republican Party is apparently no longer capable of doing/saying anything constructive; they are reduced to parroting talking points written for them by whoever writes these things.
