Actually I don't think you can with Win2k Server (what I'm running). I need this to run as a service. I tried FireDaemon but it doesn't seem to be working. Says it's running... but it doesn't appear to start working until I log in. Suckage

You can use TweakUI to log in automatically to W2K, but is that what you are trying to do? Someone reviewed this receiver on slashdot and I think he found a way around the log-in issue. I will see if I can find the article... Ok I found the article, he got the software to run as a service using FireDaemon and said it worked great. I think he did it with W2K Pro, he doesn't state, but maybe it doesn't work with W2K Server?

I found that article on Slashdot and it said he uses FireDaemon.. don't know what he's doing but this doesn't work for me.... looks like this Rio software requires the system tray to be alive or something because it sits there doing nothing.... the minute I login it's starts up.

The TweakUI logon thing does indeed work on Win2k server

I wonder if that ~$250 item is actually the rio advanced product that Sonic Blue selling for $1500. Seems like a heck of a retail mark down. Also seems like a good deal for a unit with a 40gb hard drive, cd burner and all that.

I checked with pricegrabber and a number of stores are selling the item with the correct name, but only NecXdirect has a description and photo, which do match the Rio Advanced. Curiously most of the other stores list it as a "tape mp3 am/fm 120W speakers" and some call it the "Rio executive microsystem". Makes it sound more like a mini-stereo-system than the rio advanced. Except SonicBlue doesnt make nor has announced any such system.

I'd love to have the Rio Advanced for $250, simply because it makes it pretty easy to knock out a cd-r of a set of tunes without a lot of complication and I'm forever getting asked to burn a disk for friends...with this I could show them how to do it themselves.

I sure as heck would hate to end up getting some oddball minisystem I dont need and then duking it out with one of these retailers to ship it back at their cost and give me a refund as it isnt what they described on their site.

Maybe on the other hand, Sonic Blue discovered they had no market for these things and decided to dump them.

Never mind, I just answered my own question. NecXdirect just changed the description to it being a stereo system, not the Rio Advanced, although the picture they show is still the Rio Advanced.

Curiously, this is labeled as a Diamond/Rio/Sonic Blue product. As far as I know they never made such an item.

If you ordered this from anywhere thinking you were getting the Rio Advanced, I'd promptly go cancel that order before the product ships and you have a problem on your hands.

I have also been trying to keep track of that RIO EX1000. There are no reviews of it yet that I can find and I don't think that RIO has shipped any of their pre-orders yet. I also noticed that the descriptions for it are now all wacky. NECX used to have the full correct description for it and now they have that stupid Executive system description. I am curious to see how much the EX1000 eventually sells for. There is no way this thing will sell for $1500. Rio is on crack. You can buy a whole new computer with CD-burner for $650.
Link to EX1000 with incorrect description but great price.
EDIT... The plot thickens, I also went to pricegrabber and saw all those weird descriptions of the EX1000. So I went to the SonicBlue website. They have now changed the name from "Rio EX1000 Advanced Digital Audio Center" to "Rio Central". A search on their site for EX1000 now turns up nothing. I checked out all the news stories from CES and they all refer to it by the original name. I think this thing is vaporware just like all the other stuff at CES. The "Rio Home Receiver" is supposed to be a big part of the "Rio Central". Rio is even including one if you by the Rio Central off their website. This seems odd to me because Rio seems to have abandoned the Rio home Receiver. They have not updated any of the software or firmware for this thing since it came out. The guy who reviewed this on Slashdot said he had a contact at Rio that stated that they were working hard on updating the Home Reciever. Oh Really? This all shows that Rio is completely lost on the direction they want to go.

I still have a web page capture of the necxdirect site with the description reading like the original Rio advanced receiver, different from whats there now. If anyone wants it or wants to host it, or gives a #$%#, let me know and I'll give out a copy.

I sent a note to necxdirect about cancelling my order. It was rerouted to "Gateway accessories", who emailed me back. I advised them of the situation they were wandering into, havent had a reply yet...

targg- Did they charge you're credit card right away when you pre-ordered? I went to the original NECX page before they changed it and I was tempted to order it, but I still thinks it vaporware. I didn't want a charge on my card for something that didn't exist. I will try and pre-order off you're archived web page if they don't charge right away.

I was looking at the Sonic Blue page about this thing (the Home Central or whatever they're calling it these days). You can barely find any specs whatsoever on their site. Their support page takes you back to the homepage, and there aren't any specs listings that I can find. The closest thing for finding out anything about it was their FAQ. That's where it said that it didn't include onboard ethernet, only Home PNA. But, it "does support the use of a USB ethernet adapter". For $1500 I for sure better have onboard 10/100.

I dont think they charged me for it right away but I havent gotten my bill yet. They ARE dragging their feet on cancelling it, I submitted two requests for cancellation yesterday (supposedly within 24 hours, but thats come and gone).

I dealt with one of these idiots a few months ago. Stalled me on a cancellation until they could stuff the unwanted order out the door (fulfill at all costs), then refused to take it back without me paying for shipping and a restock fee. Three days they were supposedly trying to cancel. Congratulations: you sold a $179 item you made $20 off and lost a customer for life.

That web retailer will remain nameless because it was Focus Camera. Avoid.

I too was suckered into this one and ordered 2!

I noticed that the description had changed yesterday and promptly called Customer Service and got through. The CS rep called the distributor and said that the item the have on order is the mini shelf system. I told him that the mini shelf system is NOT what i ordered! I sent him to riohome.com where he saw the same picture as the unit they were selling. I told him how the description was exactly what is on the rio site.

He asked if i would like to cancel my order. I said "NO, i want what i ordered. I want what was advertised in the description and photo!"

NEWS BREAK- THEY JUST CALLED! no kidding, as i was writing this response... I'll explain later

He then said that he needed to contact the web department and find out what was going on. After staying on hold for about 10 mins, he came back and said he would have to call me back. i quickly got his name and extension.

He didnt call, so i did. I called about an hour ago and left a message on his voice mail. I told him i was checking up, but i also informed him that if they ship the products and they are not what i ordered, i WILL NOT pay for restocking and shipping back!

****Well he just called me back. He said that the person who is responsible for dealing with 3rd party companies, like NECXDirect, is not in today. When he is, the CS rep will call me back with whatever information is available. He also said that if there is a mistake in shipping, i will not be held responsible for shipping. He will take care of that personally.

Well, im going to push this one. i want the Rio home center bad!!! I'm not going to cancel my order just yet. I want two of em!!

Whoever has the copy of the website before the change, could you please send me a copy? walbers@esri.com

Thanks

GI - keep us updated please. I've got a screen-shot of the old incorrect information from their website that I'll e-mail you tonight if you still want it. I've had an order placed since Saturday - I'm interesting in hearing what they tell you. Thanks !

They just called me back.

The claim it was a item# mix up and the description they have on the website now is the correct description. They cannot sell me what was there before for the simple fact, they don't carry it. I had them cancel the orders

While i was on the phone with him, i checked the site, and they STILL have the photo of the unit i want, but the description has changed. I informed him of this and he gave me some crap line about it being a standard photo from RIO. Well, there goes that.

NOW, there is always the option of price matching this when it finally comes out. Even if we cannot get it to the 249 price, we could always order it from Rio, and use AMEX to get $250 off.

I still want the screenshot!!!

Sent the screenshot to those two that requested. Everybody please don't reply 'e-mail it to me too' - I've done my good deed for the day :)

GI - as mentioned before, keep us in the loop on what you do with the info. Thanks !

this EX1000 issue is ridiculous, on the level of the Geforce4 at BB and then some!

i just sent them an email a little while ago and eagerly anticipate their response. before ordering OVER a week ago, i called and verified that what was on the site was the Rio EX1000 (the $1500MSRP unit) and everything checked out. so i ordered 2 for $250 ea, just under $500 total after discount and shipping. i received order confirmation and back order notices via email, and the site still shows "on back order".

now suddenly they have changed the description/specs of the item??? BULL SH*T.

there are laws against this kind of practice in every state. this is comparable to saying "32inch high definition color tv for $200" on your website and then shipping the consumer a 9inch black and white tv, and expecting that to be OK.

i am not going to just let this go away. i am not going to cancel my order. in my email, i said that i would only accept the original unit i ordered at the price i agreed to pay, and nothing else of this would suffice. i am not cancelling my order nor will i accept a substitute. i will go as far as i need to go to get the original product at the original price. the same game we are playing with BB but on a smaller scale since fewer people got in on it, unfortunate for us... (2000 people complaining is louder than 20-50).

i expect things will work out well for me/us as this is Gateway NOT BB and so they actually care about their customers and reputation. personally, i have 3 friends who ordered 2 at this price as well from NECX, so we are all in the same boat.

The EX1000 does not exist according to RIO's website. It does not exist in it's original form and it does not exist in this new stupid mini-stereo form. Rio has made no announcements about a mini-stereo, they did not show it at CES and there is no information on it from any source.

So my question is... what the heck does NECX think they are going to ship? They now have advertised two different products for pre-order that do not exist.

The internet was supposed to fix problems like this. Remember when the dream was that all products would be available online at decent prices? Remember when all documentation would be available and everything would be updated in real time? The only thing the internet has done is automate supidity and that is a scary thing.

I'll go one better.

I'm in my third day of desperately trying to cancel my order. I've called. I've emailed. I've sent screen caps of what I ordered vs what is on there. They assure me it'll be cancelled "within 24 hours...but sometimes these back ordered items ship before we can cancel them!". I've assured them its on their dime if they do. Here I am several days later...still sitting in stasis, not cancelled.

They appear to be determined to sell me a product I didnt order, fulfilled by a company that does not make such a product.

Maybe I can just get them to send me a life sized picture of the unit I really wanted.

Very, very humorous.

I think once I get this cancelled, I'll delight in buying the actual Rio Advanced receiver from Tiger Direct for $129 after Sonic Blue/Rio discovers nobody on the planet would buy this thing for $1500 and even $250 is a reach.

I had an old "pizza box" bookpc, dropped an old celeron500 and a spare 256mb of memory from the PNY deal, and the old 30mb disk from my upgraded tivo. Real Jukebox and a copy of the rio receiver broadcast software. Woo hoo, this does the same frickin thing.

Damn, I just re-read that last sentence. I gotta stop buying stuff.

as far as cancelling your order etc, just DENY the FedEx or UPS shipment when they attempt to deliver it. if you get a tracking number you can even just go to the shipping co's website and choose Return to Sender. you should not incur any fees/charges as a result of this.

also, if you accept the package, but don't open it, there's a chance you might be able to bring it back to the shipping co and try to have it returned for free, though i'm less sure about that.

good luck fellas.

Only problem is even with a refuse-shipment they're going to try to stuff me with the shipping charges and possibly a restock fee.

Maybe it'll all work out easily, but the last time this happened I spent (and I am absolutely not making this up), three phone calls totalling over an hour and a half dozen emails over $10 in shipping. I told them they would be going out of business if they always tried this hard to lose a customer over ten bucks.

I'm still dying to figure out who actually makes this 'executive microsystem' since its obvious Rio doesnt. I've done searches looking for a matching system until I'm blue in the face, but I dont see anything for 'ex-1000', or anything related to Rio on this product.

check out this Sony deal for around $500
Sony HARD1000 Audio Hard Disc Recorder

vs the rio advance for over $1k (if my NECX order does not work out, which is looking likely)

this sony thing needs a cat5 conxn to get on my network and access shared mp3s etc, and a burner would be nice, but this thing is pretty cool... of course, it is sony which means its overpriced, will probably break at 12mos + 1 day, will not be upgradeable, and will have DRM... =(
