Is that a joke?

Do you dive below the speed limit?

No offense, but shens!

(Around here if you drive only the speed limit you'd be a road hazard blocking everybody else. You'd cause wrecks.)

No, he actually is right. Visit Seattle and see for yourself. Most traffic drives EXACTLY at the 60 mph speed limit on freeways, and about 20-30% drive at least 2-3 mph under the speed limit.

Craziness. Guess all the rain has people depressed. 😛

I learned to drive in a DC suburb. I only went the speed limit to pass driving school.

That sounds like the most frustrating town in the world. Where I live, driving under the speed limit often means someone is drunk. Driving slow and slowly swirving within the lane go hand in hand. If I drive past the guy (passing a drunk is actually a very stupid idea), I'll often see the slow driver with the window all the way down and it looks like he's trying so hard not to blow chunks 😛

Shens my ass. The highways around the city are all 60MPH - almost everyone goes 55-60, with a decent amount going 50. If I find some room and go 65-70 it feels like I'm flying.

Think that's bad? Try driving in the city itself. 30MPH roads - average driver will go 15-20, even when the roads are empty. Change lanes? Don't need a turn signal. Driving down the middle lane of a 3-lane one way street? I can turn from this lane without signaling or changing lanes. Hear a sirin? SLAM ON YOUR BRAKES! We all know that gridlock is the best way for a fire truck or ambulance to pass, after all.

You have no idea how pathetic the drivers here are. They shouldn't be licensed.

I mean, in most other cases in life you'd realize that when you're outnumbered 13 to one you're probably the one in the wrong and you're not going to win.

No, it doesn't. It means they are trying to pass people in the right/middle lanes but they can't because too many people are driving the speed limit in the left lane. I drive about 160 miles a day on I-95, between Richmond and DC. I can't count how many times I thought that traffic was really bad only to come up on some moron just cruising in the left lane. Once I get past him there's no traffic for miles. It usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes for all the cars in front of me to find a way around him. This happens at least once a day. That get's old quick.

Do you mean you're in the left lane for 15-20 minutes at a time but yet you actually claim that you aren't driving in the passing lane? 😕 *boggle*

Again. . .the blind hypocrisy of people who drive in the passing lane complaining about how people shouldn't drive in the passing lane just befuddles me.

Why do you keep repeating this? It's ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with driving in the left lane as long as you're constantly passing people in the right lanes. You get over once you pass people or you decide to go the same speed as those in the right lanes. If you're the only car in the left lane with a line of people behind you, you get over. If there's no cars in the right lanes, you get over. It's not rocket science. Have you never driven in traffic before? I'll make it simple.

That is fine, you're not the idiot driver that everyone's complaining about. You're just trying to get around the guy in the front holding up traffic.

The problem with driving in the leftmost lane is that you are never going fast enough because it seems regardless of the speed you're going there's CONSTANTLY some guy up on your bumper. You can be going 90 and there will still be some a-hole mad at you for "going slow" in the fast lane. The people driving in the left lane are rarely if ever going the speed limit or lower in my experience. They are almost always going faster than the posted limit to some degree. The problems arise when they are not going "fast enough" for the one guy who thinks the lane is his own personal freeway. So you tell us. . .just what is the left lane speed limit? You can be driving 75 in the left lane, passing every other car on the right and STILL have some Type - A speed freak BMW driving yahoo get mad at you and start making obscene gestures at you in your rear-view because he can't go 85. However if he were to maintain a respectful following distance and politely flash his headlights at me 2 or 3 times as a commonly understood signal that he wanted to go by me, I'd happily move out of the way at the earliest safe time to do so. But this almost NEVER is how it goes down.

I drive by the speed limit. I'm always in the right lane when possible. I'm happy doing my thing, you speeders can do your thing. Happy world.

But what pisses me off is when even I need to pass someone (like a bigass slow truck), and you speeding fuckers behind me don't think my passing speed it acceptable and you honk at me while I'm already in the process of passing something. It's like fuck you douchebag, I'm not going to accel from 55 to 80 just to I can pass a truck at a speed that doesn't cause you to brake. Deal with it. I'll get my ass back over to the right as soon as I'm done passing this beast of a truck. In 7 seconds. I know... LONG time to wait.

If I pass you on the right hand side, I hate you.

Of course, I also hate you if I am doing ten over, then when I'm a safe distance from the guy I'm passing, You have to get 5 in. from my bumper, swerve into the right lane, speed up to 20-30 over, just to pass me... Wait the 1/2 second for me to pull into the right lane.

Here in Illinois, you have 1/2 mile to make a pass in the left lane on state highways and interstates. If you are in the left lane for more than 1/2 mile for any reason you can be cited (except if traffic congestion prevents lane changes).

I've already seen a state trooper pull over a left lane camper that was doing the speed limit, but had room to get over but wouldn't. He had about 9 cars behind him, including the trooper.

Why does it matter? You're either jumping lanes back and forth while passing on the left or jumping back and forth while passing on the right.

I only get in the left lane to pass. I never cruise in it. I pass quickly and get back over, using my signals.

Passing on the right is a very rare event for me. I just don't do it unless forced to. IIRC, when I pass on the right it has always been to a left lane hog going slow.

The reason I quit speeding is because it's never fast enough. I am usually 5 over at most now.

Even 15 over wasn't fast enough for some people, so I just quit playing that stupid game.

You could be doing 70 in a 55, passing a truck or two reasonably quickly, and still have people flash their lights at you and tailgate...

Believe me, when I pass on the right, there is generally nobody around (I live in Idaho). So you have some idiot cruising in the left lane for no apparent reason, and slowly. Despite all the signs that say "The left lane is for passing only" And "You will get ticketed if you are in the left lane and not passing" (and yes, there are signs up that say that).

It matters because the person that sits in the left lane can impede traffic when there is any. So essentially he causing a traffic hazard that can be easily avoided (Making people slow down because of your driving is a hazard)

Not to mention obstructing the path of emergency vehicles. You never know when a cop might be rushing to an emergency. Keep the left lane open so they can get to where they need to go.

haha, she likes redneck idiots that think they will actually do something like he said 😛

i have a full size truck as well, with a healthy bumper on it. if you find yourself behind me and dont like following, by all means attempt to "make me move". ive pulled over to face road warriors before and never been worse for the wear.

this is all a moot point tho, since im one of the guys in the center lane doing 74 in a 65. well, i call it the center lane but the freeway on the way home has 5 lanes each way. we are mostly all doing 74+ anyway. the far right lane is constantly at 55-60 tho with idiots that cant get to 65 before getting on the freeway.

i love arguing this point, it really pisses people off. in a large city like the phoenix metro valley theres no way in hell there will ever be a clear left lane for willy-nilly passing of other cars. too many people jammed into the freeways for that to ever happen. even with all those lanes we DO have traffic will get down to 15mph across all the lanes during rush hour.

If I'm passing someone in the left lane and I'm moving "faster" than they are, I'll keep going until clear and move over. I will not speed up unless I see that I'm going to take a long time to get past them (i.e. moving about 1 mph more than the car I'm passing). I'll speed up if it's going to take awhile to pass them though.

i was in sand diego over the summer. while on the 8 in the center lane, an asswipe in a lexus whipped past everyone in the left lane, only to be stopped by dps (chp?) for speeding. lol. id say there is a speed limit for sure in all lanes, and is the same white sign posted for all lanes.

When I say theres no speed limit, I'm half joking. Obviously theres a speed limit but its all relative. I've never gotten caught for "speeding" in the left lane because I never drive THAT much faster than the rest of traffic.
