Rift guidance

So, Rift is out next week and basically, I only want to get involved with a new MMO in its first 2 or 3 months so as not to be behind everyone else. But that's part of the reason for my post. Does anyone have any advice on whether I should get it? My previous background is Everquest.

Questions like, how long does exp grinding take, is it not too long not too quick. And this question is doubly important because, if I knew that getting into it 3 or 4 months later would be OK because I wouldn't be stuck behind everyone else with no one to group with at low levels(and thus if grouping is necessary to exp quickly), I wouldn't worry too much about not getting it from day one.

Edit- almost forgot, I would only be interested in the PvP enabled servers, if there is such a thing, so that adds even more importance to the "can I catch up if I start 4 months later" question.

So, any comments on that? If I don't get Rift the next window of opportunity to get in on day one of a good game would be The Old Republic, probably.

I played since Beta 4 and before that I was playing WoW since beta.

The game has a ton of quests to do while leveling and most of the hubs have quests that are grouped in a close area. The quests you do honestly make the leveling grind seem more fun since rifts can also open up over time and in areas where you quest. The rifts break up some of the more mundane kill random mobs to loot item quests (there are way more types of quests though). There is really no worry about needing a group for quests since the only semi-difficult things would be closing the elite rifts by yourself (can be done with proper level/strategy).

PvP is might be difficult for the first few weeks to catch up, but you can buy gear with the points you gather and eventually be on par. It is similar to BGs in Wow in how you gain points, but the warfronts are better than WoW IMHO (might be the fact of multiple rank 14/gladiators I have had over the years talking though).

Overall if you are looking for a new MMO with a crazy amount of class options due to multiple trees and want the new MMO that tries to get every old MMO's best ideas, then I would say go for it. There is a headstart going on as of today for people that pre-ordered that would already put you behind however, but I would not worry about that since most of these people will be more PvE instead of PvP from my experiences.

one thing i didn't care for was all the different types of currencies. like you got "currency" for doing quests, different currency for doing rifts, different currency for pvp, different currency for finding artifacts, different currency for doing crafting, etc.

there's just so much different stuff going on it's overwhelming. in a way variety liek that is good but it can also be a bit overboard.

the main currencies are money, the things you get from rifts, and the pvp stuff.

the crafting currencies are just tokens to buy new recipes. i don't remember any artifact currency, but i could have just missed that.

it;s still completely separate and totally unneeded imo.

Lvling up is effortless, not even 3 days after headstart began, we had our first shard first lvl 50 (max level) character.

You can quest on solo quests effortlessly but it gets a bit boring.

so i've decided i'm buying this... but...

are collector's edition items worth the extra $10? specifically the mount and the extra backpack space? just curious since i never made it into the beta.

The general consensus seems to be that the backpack is well worth it, but the mount is fairly worthless. IIRC, mounts at 20 at around 1-2 platinum, which you will easily have by then. So it saves you a little bit of (in game) cash, but not enough to make a huge impact.

Hm...based on level alone I shouldn't worry about getting in on the game 3 months later. But are there things besides levels that take a lot of time to accumulate? Kind of like AAs in Everquest, it can take 5-6 thousand AA per class now?

yeah i was already leaning towards getting it just for the backpack... as limited inventory space/carrying capacity drives me nuts in just about every game

I'd say yes for the CE version even though I didn't buy it.

You can get the mount at level 6 [Silverwood starting area] which helps to quest faster, get to rift/invasion locations faster, and gather mats faster [that's if you take up a crafting profession]

The extra bag space helps as A LOT of loot drops from rifts, invasions, and mobs.

I can't say for sure, as I only made it up to level 21ish in beta, but Rift SO FAR seemed like a game where someone who dedicates hundreds of hours won't have an extreme advantage over someone who dedicates only a few dozen hours.

Leveling in very quick and simple, gear seems readily available, money is easy to get, etc.

What it's going to come down to for me is whether or not you have to raid for hours upon hours or grind rep or battlegrounds for eons to get the best gear. If they avoid that horrible mechanic in WoW and several other MMOs and make gear much more randomized (random mobs out in the world can drop really good stuff, just very rarely), it'll be a far stronger game in the long run.

How is PVP on the PVP servers? Can you hunt your enemies down and grind their bones to dust, or is only part of the world PVP enabled and it's easy to gate/teleport/run to safety? I already know you can't random PK people on your own faction, only enemy factions..
