Our free-to-play model is built on a simple idea: everyone can download, log in, and play all of RIFT, free. Starting June 12, new players will have access to all game content – from dungeons and Warfronts to the latest raids – with no level restrictions.

On June 12, new players will start with 2 character slots and 3 bag slots, while veteran players – anyone who has purchased RIFT or Storm Legion – will keep everything they've earned to date!

Subscribers, known as Patrons, receive special bonuses to currency, mount speed, various types of experience, and more!

I wasn't aware they had enough of a subscriber base to warrant not going F2P until now. At least, their model is a good one. Everything available with a few restrictions that can be paid for.

Rift was a solid game when I played it. I probably enjoyed leveling in it the most out of any MMO. The invasions with the rifts were lots of fun and happened often so you never were bummed you missed one because they were frequent and multiple ones usually and you didn't have to participate if you didn't want too but it was always worth participating.

My only complaint and reason I stopped playing was when you reached max level, the end game was literally an exact copy of WoW's and I didn't want that so I left.

That is exactly when I left. I had already done that end game stuff and wanted something refreshing, not just a rehash.

I played Rift for about 3 months, and it is indeed a great game. I haven't played in a long while, should be interesting to see how F2P works out. I'll check it out again when I can.

So, wonder how much value in the stack of game time cards I go when amazon had them for $12.

I loved Rift when I first played it. The leveling was extremely fun with the invasions. The starting level alone got me hooked when I took part in defending the main area's city with a massive group of lowbies. But I started late and my 30s-50s were stagnent. Pretty much no one did the invasions and it just ended up being another quest hopper.

Got to max level and found nothing special. Dungeons were same old, same old. Pvp got old fast. And many of the shards were too empty. Rift really jumped the gun when they opened up a lot of extra servers. The population was too spread apart after that.

Is there still a subscription? What does it offer?
Yes! Subscribers will be known as Patrons and receive a host of special benefits and abilities:

+15% Currency (always on)
+10% Mount Speed (always on)
Daily Boost Set: Each day you can activate bonuses to the Experience, Notoriety, Favor, Prestige and Tokens you earn while playing.
Daily Summons: Instant access to your banker, guild banker, and trainer. You'll receive access to these convenience features on a set cooldown.

What do I get for purchasing the original RIFT box and the Storm Legion expansion?
Both the RIFT and Storm Legion products grant permanent unlocks to your account. Owning the base game will open extra character and bag slots, while Storm Legion will unlock the expansion Souls (Harbinger, Tempest, Tactician, and Defiler). Check out the table above for details.

Got the box of Rift on sale for $5 at some point. Played for like a week. Booting it up to get Storm Legion for free through Raptr. Just idling at the login screen. Will definitely mess around once I get the free 30 days and then it goes f2p.

Hm, so in other words, find the game for a cheap price now (like the $5 mentioned above) and avoid paying for that extra junk.

Well it gets you 4 extra character slots as well as 2 additional bag slots. If you have the expansion you can use the expansion souls as well. Those bonuses are given for retaining a subscription once it goes f2p.

Well that's bad. I bought a year in April 2012 and then didn't play all year.

Then it auto renewed, I was thinking maybe I'll play again...

But now free to play a month after it charges for a year?

The benefits for subscribing seem small, I have basically no interest in that. I just contacted them about a refund - they refused.

Now they're sending me an e-mail for 'second level'.

If you play the starter edition for around 14 hours with Raptr installed you will get the game and expansion for free.

I gave RIFT a try for a few days and it seemed decent enough. I believe it was a trial back then, can't even remember if it was (I do remember not paying anything though, so must have been a trial period). I thought it was "ok", although that was long ago, the game was still quite new I think, so it must have changed a lot since then, and what I did see of it was nothing really (so in other words I know next to nothing about the game).

I do often read about RIFT being a near "mirror" copy of World of WarCraft (at least for end game content). Now the thing is I myself never played WoW, at all, zero... well not quite zero. I do remember trying it like one or two years ago when Blizzard allowed newcomers to give it a try until you'd reach a specific level and/or area (can't remember which was the limit, or it was both). It was the starting area and I kid you not when I say I got bored right there, or maybe I just wasn't in the mood that day (or that week, can't tell), so I stopped and considered the case closed (I.E. I knew then that WoW was indeed "not for me"). So if it's a copy of WoW's end game then I wouldn't be spoiled nor annoyed since indeed I never experienced WoW at all. I guess that'd be some sort of an advantage if I ever want to invest time for RIFT (until and during its end game).

I'd say that I'm quite happy and busy enough burning time left and right in three other MMORPGs lately so I'm not sure (so little spare time for too many games at once). I'm still leveling two characters in TERA, starting "proper" end-game in DCUO with one character (villain) and have just started end-game in Guild Wars 2 after all that time (got my first lvl 80 last week, yep I'm late to the GW2's end-game party). If I do play RIFT I'm sure I won't reach anything end-game until maybe a year from now anyway, but if it's F2P then I basically got nothing to lose and I could experience it at my own pace, so maybe I'll give it a go at least for a couple of levels more than I did back during the trial.

Everquest was the big breakthrough in 'graphical MUD'. World of Warcraft copied shamelessly and added tweaks of improvement.

Rift copied pretty shamelessly from World of Warcraft for the basic MMO gameplay and added their own tweaks of improvement.

For example, 'in WoW, you can have two professions? Here you can have three!'

Haven't played much recently, and can't even add my storm legion key yet as they won't let you unless you are under subscription. Main thing I'd need to look up before playing again would be how to configure you soul as it was a rather bloated system of choices.

i bet you this is all defiance's fault.

they realized that F2P makes money from defiance.
Only they realize defiance is a shitty MMO.

RIFT is so much better then defiance... its like night and day.
RIFT however is so much more mature then defiance so partially has to do with it i guess.
But Defiance is completely barf'd up game play wise, that i bet u trion see's it not lasting, hence why they moving the model over to there main cash cow.

I have 2 lvl60's in rift... rift kept me busy for about a few months...
Defiance only held me for 1 week tops.
After i found out the story on the game has almost 0 impact to the failing TV show.

They're also very different in style/gameplay so maybe Defiance just didn't fit you :)
