Riding bike and dog comes after you. What do you do?

If you are on a bike, the dog can't catch you are abnormally slow.
Even I can outrun most of them on foot.
But that looks more like a case of pay attention there is no reason you should have hit it.

That would depend on the road conditions, if it is anything like dirt country roads, it's not easy bike fast. Going 5-15 mph on undeveloped roads seems realistic. Any dog that can't have an initial speed of up to 10mph is worthless as a guard dog. They should be able to run 18-20mph at initial burst easily. No way you run this fast unless you're some pro athlete track sprinter.

What really are the legal repercussions of shooting a dog dead and leaving it in the middle of the road?

If the dog in my post above had attacked my daughter when she was riding her bike it'd be dead. Assuming I had legal permits for my weapons what's the worse that could actually come from it?

I don't think anything would happen to you. if a dog attacks a child i would think you are well within your rights to kill the fucker.

Yeh I've got a 10 year old rohdesian who can still get up and run. I've let her chase after deer when going through parks and she can cover 70 yards in about the same time I can do 30.

Criminally there'd be no repercussions as you're legally entitled to use any force to prevent harm to yourself or another, providing you live in a state without some weird provisions. You don't leave it in the road of course. You shoot something, you call the police and tell them. You explain your life was in jeopardy, you had no chance of successfully retreating, and you're golden. IANAL-YMMV.

Civilly someone can sue you for farting in their general direction, so no promises on that front. Up to you to decide if it's worth the fight to avoid death, severe injury, psychological trauma, altering your life to avoid the situation, or whatever.

I've heard the USPS mailmen use pepper spray of some form. You could ask your local branch or daily mailman for tips, I'd bet they have personally been in these cases more than anyone else.

You would hope. But you and I both live in IL. Which isn't exactly known as the most gun rights friendly state in the nation.

And I would assume that were would be two different recourses depending on action. If it attacked me and I shot it in defense that's one thing. If it attacked my kid and I drove down the road and put it down that's probably a different thing entirely.

Has she been able to catch one? That would be crazy hunter dog skills.

I had a dog chase me down on my bike a while ago, luckily, I had a mixture of grapefruit juice and water in my drink bottle so I hosed him in the eyes with that mixture. He quickly backed off. If that didn't work, next up was the frame pump.

I'd recommend pepper spray though, just make sure you don't spray it into the wind or it will come back into your face.

And to the guy who says he can outrun most dogs on foot...you are full of shit.

Thanks for all of the replies, guys. Some good suggestions and funny comments. I think I will start by calling the Police Department. As I said in my original post, I can't even approach the house to talk to the owners. I'd like to get some pepper spray, but with this being open farmland it's almost always windy and I don't want that stuff in my face. I've see some pepper spray devices that shoot a sort of gel, so maybe I will look in to that.

Foamers are less impacted by windy conditions. Unfortunately they suffer some reduced range. Also, you'd have better luck with a larger can since they tend to have a bit more projection than the tiny, easy to carry ones. I'd look into animal specific options, or contact animal control for advice to get the best brand allowed in your area.

Spray it with bear mace. Not just the eyes but completely cover its fur. The dog will run back to its owner or maybe even into the owner's house and get mace everywhere! Cleaning that off would be a bitch too.

Not even close. A white tail can run nearly 40MPH and it doesn't take them long to get there. My old pooch is probably lucky to hit 25MPH. I'm doing good to hit 15MPH.

🙂

You can outrun most dogs on foot!! WHat are you superman? Are you in the Olympics?

" Domestic dogs vary in size and shape so significantly that it's difficult to get a bead on just how fast they can run in general. However, most seem to travel at top speeds between 18 to 31 miles per hour, with 19 or so being the average.

This puts dogs at slightly over a three-minute mile on average. The human per-mile record is slightly under four minutes.

How do you feel now?

When he's not outrunning dogs, he's working on a two minute mile on his treadmill (in between attempts at seeing whether a plane takes off on it or not). Then he chills out in his ten million dollar mansion and makes love to his model girlfriend (whose knees are most decidedly not sharp). Gotta love the internet.
