Riding bike and dog comes after you. What do you do?

talk to the owners, find a new route, talk to the local PD (for issues with 'owned' dogs our animal control refers us to the local PD, you may be different).

Last resort pepper spray, something like fox 5.3 if needed.

Pepper spray. Pick it up at your local army surplus store. It's the only humane way besides having the dog picked up by animal control.

I've considered purchasing pepper spray.

What kind of bicycles are you guys on that you can outrun dogs so easily? I have a very nice old-school 10-speed road bike and with it I'm only good for up to ~20mph in short bursts. At my top speed this dog runs up on me EASILY. And then I have to take in to account that I don't want to whipe out by hitting a dog at such speeds.

There's not one, anyone that says they can outrun a 'real' dog is completely full of shit....he probably doesn't even know how to ride a bike or do anything else athletic.

I vote for the pepper spray and hope it doesn't blow back in your face, it will not be pleasant.

Pepper spray will protect yourself, but I suggest calling the cops if the dog aggressively attacks you again. You might be able to outride it or pepper spray it away, but what if a young kid is riding through the neighborhood and the dog catches the child. The kid could be seriously hurt or worse, killed. Aggressive and dangerous dogs that aren't properly trained should not be allowed to roam freely.

A lot of the time there are local ordinances concerning un-leashed dogs and can be taken care of through animal control...I live out in the country as well and this has helped to tame my neighborhood for me.

you ride the same speed until just before it gets to you, then speed up. why the hell doesn't everyone know this?

Ummm, have you tried talking to the owner? I find it a bit odd that after the dog chases you 12 times you resort to the internet where people can't really do a damn thing about your problem. If the owners refuse to keep it in their yard, call the cops. Does this really require any big leaps in logic here?

I've had this problem with a dog in the past. Had to go down a country road and the dog was unrestrained and just a miserable piece of shit that would attack anything that moved.

I ended up leaving a branch the size of baseball bat near the edge of the property I'd grab when I got near. First day he came at me he got clubed in the head and retreated. Second day he came at me again and took a shot to the head again. Third day he saw me with the stick and chose to stay home. Didn't have problems with him again.

Probably difficult confronting the owner when he leaves a vicious dog unrestrained and guarding the property. And I would guess anyone who would do that, really doesn't want to talk to you anyways.

Nice one Dog Whisperer you just trained their damn dog to stay on the property 🙂

Since the dog is likely guarding the house, it would be impossible for you to approach it without being attacked on their property. Therefore, call the police and explain the situation. Inform them that the next time the dog attacks you you're going to shoot it in accordance with the self-defense laws of your state. Make sure they inform the owner of this fact. Request an incident report number after they've made contact with the owner to cover your ass.

Since the police don't want to do the MOUNTAIN of paperwork associated with a justified shooting, they're going to make it VERY clear to the owner that he is going to keep the animal restrained.

Then grab yourself a cpl/cwp, take a class, a reliable .45 semi, get some range time in, and enjoy your ride. If it attacks you, empty the mag into it. Problem solved.

that sounds like a very time-efficient, inexpensive solution. Perhaps he should sign up with the Marines in the interim, train to be a recon sniper, and in a few years just shoot the dog from the comfort of his own house?

Or the OP could just get some pepper spray to solve the problem and choose not to engage in the over convoluted gun nut solution.

you kicked a dog in the face? way to go ghandi. i hope those doggies gang up on you and bite you in the ass.

back on topic, i would've kicked that dog in the face. hard.

Sry, but I never suggest someone carry a weapon without at least some training.

Also, once done it's there for future use. There's nothing wrong with investing in safety for life.

I've had good success with stopping. They then lose interest. I'd go with pepper spray next. What I won't do is keep going, i got bit pretty bad doing that by a pack of 3.

Why stop there when he can invent ion cannon technology, launch his own space station and NUKE IT FROM ORBIT?!

Because it's not always effective, and can get the user as well (especially outdoors). They do make animal specific repellents, but all chemical deterrents have a chance of failure not present in 8 .45 hollow points to center mass.

Moreover, the police won't give a damn if you threaten to spray an animal. That's hardly any work at all. Guarantee the use of a firearm and they'll be ALL over it.

I run, so my only option is to stop running when they chase me. It's pretty scary when a whole group of dogs come at you. But the one time it happened, and they all looked pretty fierce, they completely went docile when they reached me, haha. No horror stories yet, but I stopped running in my neighborhood due to loose dogs. Although, I did meet a few women when they come out to retrieve their dogs. So that's a definite pro for stopping....

What really are the legal repercussions of shooting a dog dead and leaving it in the middle of the road?

If the dog in my post above had attacked my daughter when she was riding her bike it'd be dead. Assuming I had legal permits for my weapons what's the worse that could actually come from it?
