"What number are you thinking of?"

Sorry if it's been mentioned. I didn't read the previous responses that said the same thing.

wtf is the constraint on that question? seriously, exactly WHAT makes one answer more correct than the other?

Alright, my dad just offered an actual solution besides what you guys said of "What's the number"

He said to ask "Is the number at the beginning or end of the sequence"

If it's at the beginning, it's obviously 1, and if it's at the end, then 3...but if it isn't, they would say "neither" and you would know it's 2

That kinda almost seems like 2 questions you're asking though.

the order depends on what the function of that sequence is....

Yeah I guess so. I just assumed that it would follow in an increasing number fashion...but you know what they say when you assume.

If anyone can find a link on a website that has this question then I'd appreciate it. My searching skills are lackluster.

I want to shoot the OP

The first answer is the only logical one (mind you, some of the others are more than acceptable). There are no set rules (that you've mentioned) that stop someone from asking that question. Don't overcomplicate something so simple.

I believe there is still some buckshot left in that 20gauge over there on yonder gun rack😉

"If you don't tell me what it is I will kill you and your whole friggen fimaly? so what's it going to be fatty? "

That could yield different answers, of which some of them might not even be numbers. Plus, the first isn't a question.

Just ask them if they are thinking of one. They will then mentally assess if they were thinking of one. By doing this, they are in fact now focusing on the number one. Proceed to scream, "You're thinking of ONE", in their face.

Works every time.

yeah, stress can skew the results....

*cocks gun*

I do like my odds though...

Maybe something to do with the Pythagorean theorem? A right triangle with sides of length 1, 2 and 3.
