the funny thing is... those extravagent FART pipes make the car sound like ASS, and you can tell what's under the hood too when all they have is a sh1tty folger's tin can on the back... it would be more beneficial if they actually had alot of exhaust from a high power engine, but you can always tell when the car is gutless cause it really does just fart, and sound like crap... why don't they do a header and a cold air intake and crap before they put that CRAP on? no idea.. Stupid.

Maybe they are still stuck in their "Tom & Jerry" or "RoadRunner" mindset and think that a larger exhaust pipe is equivalent to attaching a large rocket to make the car run faster.

i believe you lose torque with dual exhaust.

less back pressure = less torque. something ive heard from other "ricers."

Not saying this isn't true, but it sure doesn't sound right.
I would think that tuned headers with absolutely no restrictions (back pressure) would produce the most power.

ok, i drive a honda civic hatchback with a simple exhaust. i did not put it on to be cool, nor to be noticed. it has a noise to it, but not too loud where you can hear it from miles and miles away.

why do we do it? because we like it. its just like how you like your green shirt you wear. or your pair of sun glasses.

i was talking about a import, not a domestic car.

try to do a search for it on honda websites or something. its true. duals=less torque. you lose your back end pressure which in return loses torque!

HAHA I hate thoes cars that are load as fvck but dont go anywhere. Its especially funny when they get passed by thoes minivan soccer moms.

Less backpressure is good for performance if the output volume is correct... take a stock LT1 for example, the best exhaust size for that motor is a single 3" exhaust, but having great mufflers and headers will help it out a lot. But if the motor remains stock and you put on a dual 2.5" (5 inch) it will then lose some low-end torque.

The only time you really want to open up exhaust diameter is on high performance motors (very high compression mean CAM, etc...), or if you have forced induction.

The attitude that "less backpressure = less torque, more backpressure = more low-end torque" is muddy thinking, without understanding the dynamics of the situation. Backpressure if the pressure buildup in the exhaust system when the gas can't escape at the same rate that it's introduced. This pressure acts against the piston in the engine as it rises towards TDC during the exhaust stroke, thus reducing actual horsepower.

Ideally, you want to reduce backpressure as much as possible while maintaining a high exhaust gas velocity (higher exhaust gas velocity will assist the scavenging effect of the exaust stroke of the engine) to maintain high low-end and midrange torque. For example, look at header design. Headers for higher horsepower engines will tend to have larger diameter tubes and larger collectors, and feed into larger diameter pipes, which improves overall airflow at the expense of velocity (and low-end torque). "Street" headers will have smaller pipe diameters to increase velocity and low-end torque, at the expense of maximum top-end power (which may not be relevent on a vehicle with stock camming and stock cylinder heads).

I was driving down a road the other day and heard the "sound of fartpipe" driveby. Sure enough, Dodge Neon with a 4 inch tailpipe. Then I heard this really strange whistle that made me crank my head to see where it came from. It was a Lotus, first time I ever saw one on the road. Let me tell you the sound from the lotus was MUCH more impressive than from the dodge.

I've been modding imports for years. Even when everyone else were playing with their junkstangs and Camaro's. Apparently, kids today took a good idea and really misinterpreted it. A full exhaust system will give you gains, especially if the rest of the motor is modified. The kids today thought that since our cars made noise and were fast, that if their exhaust systems were loud, they would be fast.

Same principle goes along with these rediculous rear wings. Ground effects and body packages do work, but you have to be going fast enough to utilize it. We always had mild body kits and now I see guys/gals with these rediculous wings that are taller than their roof line. Even if this did work, they'd have to be going in speeds of excess of 100 mph to even realize the effects. If they drove at those speeds on the street, who knows if they'd even have them set up properly (most likely not). All they are doing is creating an eyesore, cop magnet and creating excessive drag (making the car slower with excess weight and drag) ruining their fuel economy.

Also.. The neighbor kid has an automatic civic with a boom system in it, Altezza rear lights, fart pipe and huge ass wing. Do you really think your car is going to go faster with 500 lbs or more of stereo equipment in it? Get real.. I don't even think this thing does over 100 mph and if it did, it would take a long time to get to that speed. Besides, he's created such a cop magnet, that he can't do anything more than the posted speed limit anyway.

My thought is if it doesn't enhance performance, get it off the car.

With these attitudes that you guys have we can no longer put pictures up on the wall or air bubbles in our shoes or have sweatshirts with logos or wear earrings or tattoos or different hairstyles or women can no longer wear makeup.

It's ridiculous. People do things because they think they look better than normal. How come I don't see any rants here about how stupid the Nike Air Bubble is. It hardly does anything and yet makes the shoes cost 50 more bucks. I don't see any rants about tattoos or earrings or hair either, yet people spend craploads of money on these things because to them it improves their appearance. It's the exact same thing with cars, people put crap on them that make them look better in their eyes. So what if it doesn't improve performance, most people know that sticking a new muffler on their car isn't going to make it compete with a corvette, but they like the style of it and the attitude that goes along with it. Lay off these so-called "ricer boys" and take a look in the mirror.

OOOOOh, you think that your hair gel makes you look better, but it doesn't improve performance at all! You're still the ugly piece of sh|t that you were before only now with a bunch of crap in your hair. I hate HAIR GEL. IT is so stupid. All these hair gellers think that they are gonna get like 10 to 25 more PNPN (Phone Numbers Per Night) just by putting some hair gel in, but really they're just gonna look stupid for trying to hit on chicks that are out of their league. Oh yeah, and those pictures on your walls, you can take them down too. They're not improving the performance of your walls or making them look better. They're really just covering up your own insecurities about the true ugliness of your apartment. A silly little flower on the wall isn't going to hide the fact that you have one bedroom a living room, three-quarters of a bathroom and a kitchen that you can barely stand in without banging into things, but with these pictures you're pretending that you're livin' large like all your favorite movie stars.

Unless you can say that you have never done anything that you thought looked cool and therefore did it that way instead of some other way, shut your mouth about all these stupid ricers. Sure their stuff on their cars doesn't improve performance, but to them it looks cool so they do it.

Ricing out your car is different from personal grooming habits and appearance. I take it that you always go out with ratty shoes and shirts and pants, totally unshaved with food still stuck in your teeth because having nice shoes, shirts, pants, being clean shaven, and clean teeth doesn't improve "performance"?

I never said that I was against these practices of making things look better. I was just trying to show that putting a huge spoiler on your car is like putting gel in your hair. It might not do anything to improve performance, but they think it looks good, SO THEY DO IT.

All of my very limited tuning knowledge has to do with much older small block US V-8s, so be gentle with me.
How does increased exhaust velocity increase low-end torque?
I'm asking because you also said:

<< Ideally, you want to reduce backpressure as much as possible while maintaining a high exhaust gas velocity (higher exhaust gas velocity will assist the scavenging effect of the exaust stroke of the engine) to maintain high low-end and midrange torque. >>

And to repeat what some others here have said, I personally don't espescially care for fartcan exhausts and non-functional wings, but it's not my money and people can do whatever they want with their cars.
I now shudder at the stuff I put on my cars in the early '60s. (I know that the fuzzy dice didn't improve my 0-60 times at all!) :)

ROFL, OWNED

hahahahaahaha :D

But yeah, I totally agree with almost everybody here, anybody with a fartcan exhaust needs to die ^_^
