RIAA: You've read about it, but how do we protect ourselves?

Ok I know alot of you have seen the RIAA posts all over ATOT, but no one has started a thread about what we can do to protect ourselves. It sounds crazy but I find myself avoiding Kazaa lately because of this, and I bet there are others who feel the same way.

So what do you suppose we can do? or is the best option to abstain? Do we legally stand a chance if we get a subpoena?
 
no, its not about that.... besides I can back up all my items with a physical bought copy, I sh!t you not... I have an entire closet full of cds, but who's going to buy a 1000 disc cd changer? Nevertheless, situations like this if you really are just backing-up your files, then are you safe even if you get subpoenaed?
 
I stopped downloading music from Kazaa after I heard they are going after EVERYONE. I don't download anymore, and I've even told family memebers to stop. I can live without music. I listen to the radio!

ew.. radio is such crappy quality. inet radio would be better, but usenet is rocks.

"Backing up your files" is specifically listed in the copyright laws as making one single copy of the CD. If you have all the CDs that you *say* you have, then just download something like Exact Audio Copy, download LAME, install both, and rip right from the CDs? You can specify better quality than what's out there. And you're guaranteed to have all the songs off of a single album, too.

Really, there's no reason to use Kazaa or any other p2p file-sharing program. Not backup purposes, or any other lame bullsh|t excuse I've ever heard.

IIRC, no. You can have a backup copy of the cd you bought from that cd, but you can't download the MP3's of it. The backup must come from the copy you have.

Right.

If you've got the CD, why do you even BOTHER with those programs? Do you LIKE to suffer through poor quality MP3s!?
 
Uninstall all P2P programs. Cease sharing files. Use a hardware firewall (at the very least a NAT router). You are now "protected."

So rip the mp3's from the original CD you already own. How hard is that? Hell, that takes me less than 3 minutes per CD now.

And it's not downloading that the RIAA is going after, it's file-sharing, i.e. those who make copyrighted files available for uploading.

I guess from their standpoint if you can't make a backup from your CD then you'll have to buy it again. More money for them. Whenever I buy a new CD, the first thing I do when I get home is make a copy and put the original in my CD tower.

Who said that he was? And where did he advocate violating copyright laws? He advocated Fair Use is all I saw. And he advised AGAINST downloading. Where is your issue?
