RIAA is killing internet radio on May 15.

ive been listing to a lot of online radio like di.fm and they are talking about the royalty rates, and how they will have to close down 🙁

I'm surprised at how few people seem to care about this. Maybe internet radio is less popular than I thought (or I'm on the wrong forum.. heh).

I called my representative's office and told him to support House Resolution 2060, the Internet Radio Equality Act. The guy on the phone said he'll pass the message along. You should call your rep too, it only takes a minute.

I can't speak for others, but I only listen to the radio in my car, and I don't get the Internet in my car. 😉

It's curious that they compare their royalties to satellite radio's royalties in terms of revenues - makes me wonder if the problem is not that the royalties are too high, but rather that their revenues are too low.

I was under the impression that regular radio stations do pay royalties as well. I guess I was mistaken. (In fact I even recall reading that the royalties go to the writer of the song, not the performer)

Edit: http://radio.about.com/od/miscellaneous/a/aa122904a.htm This page says that radio stations do pay royalties. So I'm not sure why di.fm says they don't. Unless the law changed.

If I run my own streaming media, should I supposedly be affected by this royalty thing? How does something go from streaming media to an actual radio station, does it depend on whether it is broadcasting to a public list or whether there is revenue to be had?

the harder the RIAA fights, the less guilt people have of stealing their music.... i, for one, hope they get utterly screwed and driven out of business. Maybe then the public will be given music it likes instead of whats pushed down our throats by these companies with enough money to buy radio play time.

Pushed down your throat? If you don't like what a radio station is playing, don't listen to it. If you don't like a song or CD, don't buy it.

You decide what you listen to, not RIAA or anyone else. Don't be ignorant.

Yeah, I'll probably buy a DI premium subscription although it looks like they will still be completely shut down within a month. If they are going to have to pay over two million dollars due July 15 even though their yearly income is less than 1/4 of that, there's no way they will survive in any form.

Does anyone else notice that the RIAA operates more or less like a union? The only difference is that this union doesn't even claim to serve a purpose.

In fact, this would be like if you were making $10/hour and then joined a union that cut your wage to $5.15/hour. The RIAA serves no purpose except to make money off of music artists.

WTF! The Vocal Trance stream on DI.fm is the ONLY thing I listen to on the Internet.

yup, im listening to that stream as i type this.

i switch b/w it and chillout, depending on my mood.

The only thing that will stop it if people would ever pull together and stop buying RIAA's crap. Boycott music supported by them on the 15th!!!

Or rather, they served a purpose. Now with the ease of distributing music online, they're obsolete, and they know it. They're going to whine and kick and scream, and invite their lawyers to do the same.
