Play magazine usually gives games a pretty high rating to most games but anyway the game sounds and looks awesome, cant wait to play it.

August 14th. I certainly do not trust a review that was published almost a month before the game was released, especially in a magazine, which means that the review was written even longer ago.

There are a good number of clips of the action, and it looks like a blast to me. Seems it'll be a good title for showcasing the six axis from the tutorial vid. Make a commercial with the players exaggerating every action the way a few for the Wii do FTW. ;) They mentioned a PSN demo coming soon, so if that is as fun as the trailers, I'll pick it up.

EDIT: Just noticed the date of the review, so I checked elsewhere, and a few said there are rumours the game will be out before the demo? That doesn't bode well.

On the one hand, no demo before it's released could mean they're utilizing all resources for the release. On the other hand, no demo before release would be like a movie studio not screening a movie for critics before release to ensure that they have a huge opening weekend before people find out how bad the movie is.

I really *REALLY* want this game to be great, but there's a nagging voice in my head that's telling me that this will be more style over substance.

That's been a trend lately. Various devs have gone on record saying they would prefer to use the time to fine tune the actual game rather than divert resources towards a quick demo.

I'm excited for this game. Hope it has at least some substance to it.

Considering the small amount of time needed to cut out a level or two for a demo for the good of the consumers, any reluctance will be seen as a lack of confidence in the game.

No, you could very well be right. I fear that may be truth, but hope for a quality game.

rumors are absolutely false, considering the demo is coming out Thursday, and the game isn't scheduled for release until September iirc.

Are you somehow talking about Heavenly Sword?

This is not an attempt to curb your excitment for Lair, so don't take it the wrong way. But Play magazine while BEATIFUL, and loaded with developer interviews, is generally off the wall with their reviews. Someone made up a chart of a 12 issue stretch of review scores, and ~90% of the games reviewed during that time got between an 8 or a 9. Which somehow translates to, "Almost every game that we review is excellent." --

Which... I dunno, might not be a big deal. It could just mean that their reviewers are diehard, gaming-loving freaks of nature and are too blind to see the same flaws that the rest of us are bothered by.

Anyway, the game LOOKS nice to me, but I haven't seen any gameplay demos. I'll go look for one now.

Yea, I saw Overlord got a 9/10 from them, but it was a meh game for me

Eh, do you work in software development? In the scope of the project a demo is trivial, but it would still take a significant amount of time. Plus the demo has to go through QA just like the final game.

Speaking of QA though - it's not like developers are "fine-tuning" games right up until it gets released. It does have to go through QA first (testing is done throughout the development process, but any company that does not thoroughly test the completed product as it will be delivered to the customer is not doing their job). After QA it would have to go through manufacturing and then distribution. There is a good deal of time between completion and the release date. It SHOULD be plenty of time to get a demo ready.

My impression of LAIR for PS3 (played the one @ Comic Con 2007):

low FPS in a lot of places, most models look crappy, grainy textures, the AI for the ground troops are horrible, explosion effects look meh... It has its moments, but overall, I was disappointed. The controls were ok at first, but frustrating w/ the 6axis thing. The gameplay was a bit repetitive. It had a grainy overall look, and the terrain looking like as if each model was absolutely separate from its surroundings (water, land.. where's the shorline? castle, ground.. didn't blend in. It's as if all the buildings and environments were just attached together like legos). With those combined, it wasn't really a good experience. I could feel myself just straining my eyes a lot just to play the game.

6axis part of game:
Controls felt a bit awkward. I couldn't execute that boost move consistently, and at times, it'd do boost w/o me wanting to do it. Controls were pretty much not as responsive. It really felt like a chore to move around.

The entire game ran at nothing more than 40 fps tops. Some scenes looked like it dipped below 20 fps. I'd say the game runs at around 30 fps avg.

verdict:
all in all, I was very very disappointed with the game. The graphics make my eyes bleed, controls leave more to be desired, the AI sucks... granted, I only played the version they showed at Comic Con at the Playstation booth, but what they showed pretty much sucked. This game has one of the worse overall graphical look coming out of the ps3.

EDIT2: I can't believe why all reviews say it has nice graphics. I thought it was horrid compared to other games (namely anything using the Unreal engine).

I'm waiting for an IGN review and I'm hoping you can disable 6axis in favor of some other control method.

Well that's disappointing. It is very possible that the reviewers are really only comparing it to other games on the PS3 which have not lived up to the PS3 hype as of yet. Hopefully Heavenly Sword will live up to its hype. I want a game to come out that will actually make me want a PS3.
