Review of my Samsung 244T Widescreen

Hi folks,

As promised, I wanted to give my thoughts on my 244T.

I ordered it in silver. A minimal bezel with setup buttons on the bottom right. Pretty standard stuff for 24" monitors. Good height adjust:eek:ne thing to keep in mind. The panel will NOT lower all the way down to the base. It's lowest position has the botton of the bezel about 5 inches above the base. That could affect some folks from a head-on viewing perspective.

BUSINESS USE:
spreadsheets, email, network design software to create schematics, etc. Just simply wonderful. I can finally put an 11x17 Visio network design at 100% viewing and see the entire network without moving left and right! It's great to have dual full size web pages side by side, as well as a design excel spreadsheet and the corresponding Visio design diagram together at the same time. Even if you don't get a 244T, you simply have to get a 24" widescreen just for the screen real estate.

When using the DVI input, text and color are the best I have ever seen, and that's coming from a Mitsubishi DiamondPro 2070 22" CRT which has a great rep. for color reproduction.

I calibrated the panel with my SpyderPro and the software gamma and color controls with this panel make it easy to get a great WYSIWYG for color printing of my digital photographs.

CRITICISM: At this price, this unit should come with dual DVI inputs.

GAMING: Ah the main event, the primary reason I bought this monitor. I have been playing COD2 and HL2(with a widescreen patch) in wonderful 1920x1200 glory for several days. I am running both games will full on everything from a graphics perspective, and I can report there is absolutely no light leakage, tearing, ghosting or anything else to disrupt the experience. I have played both games during maps with a hellacious amount of graphic activity going on, and it's just like I'm in the middle of the action. The colors in HL2 really POP, something I did not experience on my CRT. Absolutely no criticism of this panel for FPS gaming. It's simply the best video gaming experience I have ever seen.

There is always a lot of talk about pixel response times and how there is no universal standard(which is odd to me as I would think that timing G2G pixel transition would be a pretty standard measurement). This one is rated at 6ms. I have no clue if it's true or not. I can tell you that during the most intense FPS gaming situations, there is no ghosting or perceptible "lag" that I can detect.

I paid $1399 for this monitor at TigerDirect. The lowest price I could find, while ensuring I was purchasing from a reputable dealer. It's expensive. about $550 more than the Dell 2405, but it was more than worth it to me. There a many folks sending back Dells with LCD leakage and high pitched whining problems, plus the 244T is a next gen. panel, whereas the 2405 is about to be replaced.

Since I want to run this panel for about 5 years, I wanted to most up to date technology available. I understand that in some cases, budgets are budgets and $550 is a lot if you are budgeting for a 2405.

I was so close to getting the Dell due to the price. I just could not chance having to deal with Dell tech. support for at least one, and maybe two or three replacements if I got a bad one.

It's a keeper!!

Wow, nice to hear! Especially coming from a high-end AG CRT. And yet another confirmation of how great Samsung LCDs are.

Do you recall the black and white levels your SpyderPro spit out or have a DeltaE graph if it's not too much trouble?

Nice review.

It narrowed my display choice down to two contenders: the cheap TN 20" 5 ms bwb Samsung 204B or the expensive (3x 204B :)) S-PVA 24" 6 ms gtg Samsung 244T. The P-MVA 20" 8 ms gtg 16 ms bwb 20 ViewSonic VP2030B was officially third in the race ;)

BTW, I forgot to ask - since your review is so positive, I assume you experienced no input lag?

I'm asking because:
a) it would absolutely kill my gaming (Q3 CPMA, for instance);
b) some people reported it, e.g. on Hardforums or here as well.

Edit: looks like it was the same user on Hardforums and Anandtech, namely Tasc.

His whole paragraph says absolutely no lag, ghosting, or delay.

This monitor sounds really good. I guess HDCP might be good. Does it support it? Or is that even something that has to be built into the monitor?

I've already seen three confirmations by Samsung on HDCP - in the US, UK and Sweden. Looks like it does support HDCP, and certainly the manual also says so. However, it doesn't seem to be 100% sure - I guess the only way to really know it is to wait for Vista and HDCP itself.

I unforutnately believe that some people still aren't exactly sure what is meant by "lag". And he also says that there is no "perceptible" lag, I'd like to see a side-by-side test with a CRT.

This user "Tasc" claims the 244T has lag when comparing his CRT next to it: link (scroll down page)

Yeah, I've read that thread. The thing is, now we have somebody claiming that there is no lag. So if this person does a side-by-side test, we could determine whether or not it is a problem in just some of the 944t panels.

could it behave differently if its being run in tandem with the CRT? maybe there's no lag when it's the only display, but with both together, there's a delay from the crt to the lcd?

The varying lag time measurements (taken by camera) are because the CPU is never a perfect timer, especially with the slow java they're using.

Look here (no don't look at that :p)

http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1028638530&postcount=95

You can see the LCD's 28 is slowly transitioning to the CRT's 31 because of the noticeable imperfection of the number 2. Response time is definitely some kind of factor here.

Here also. Some screens do it, some don't I guess. http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1028640083&postcount=97

Gotta love the pissing match in that thread.

CC has it for $999 web only price! I'm getting on! Here's a question: I'm planning on upgrading to have 2 XFX 6800GS cards and I'm wondering if the monitor has to have 2 DVI ports. Please reply if anyone knows of this.

Seriously, who wants to read a review about a monitor.

I understand that the concentration of people here with attention deficit disorder is higher that most places on the Internet, but the only way to convey the quality of a monitor is through words or seeing it physically. Pictures of the display quality will only be at or worse than what you view them on.
