Excellent work! I'm going to continue to beat that dead horse until something happens...

Sorry to be a bit off topic here, but have you had experience with http://www.kaspersky.com/antihacker at all?

Since Kaspersky seems to make the best AV, could we assume their "anti hacker" is just as good?

I have not done a vigerous comparison of firewalls. Here is a dated roundup of personal firewalls. I suspect that they have all evolved by now. One day, i hope to do one and maybe a few of my own tests, but that is in the far distant future, if ever. School is pounding me for the moment for me to do any major reviews like that.

Still got to go with NOD32. I recently tried out Kaspersky for a few weeks and, while I found it to be very effective at detecting, also found that it slowed down my computer way too much. It seemed to be bogged down in scanning while effectively bogging down my processes as well. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I will keep my eye out for a firewall comparison test. I haven't come across any yet, but then again I haven't spent all day looking for one either 😉

Ok another ?

If I want to test a few different AV programs, so I need to uninstall previous AV programs before I install a trial of another?

Basically, can I run Norton and Kaspersky at the same time?

yes or disable autoprotection

not a good idea to have 2 real time antivirus apps at the same time. Just disable the autoprotection of the preveus antivirus and then install the trial of kaspersky to see if it slows your system down.

I did not notice it hurting perforance on my test system.

Seems like the feel of Norton is a little bit better.

What would you use, if you had to go buy a license for AV software on a home computer, that contains important information?

kaspersky personal, but like i said, just a personal opinion. But i would use the trial version to see if it does not do anything bad to your system performance

Well, my system is bloated with stuff I have installed over the past 6 months, which is why I am looking forward to a reformat. I installed the software, although it is scanning all 100GB very slowly, it picked up a few things I noticed that Norton 2003 (with latest virus defs) did not.

It seems like Norton ran a bit faster, but better protection might be worth it. Have you tried the PersonalPro yet? It would seem like the Pro one would be better, just because of its added features.

Seems like it is going to take around 4 hours to do a FULL system scan.

hard to judge performance. Each antivirus has a differant method of scanning, kaskpersky maybe scanning differant types (more of) than norton. It all depends on the scanning engine. I have never used kaspersky pro, but if you got the extra cash, go for it. Especially if you use office a good deal, it apppears to integrate with it better from what i read on the site.

Thanks again. I e-mailed them asking if they offer any student discounts, not sure what the hours are for them, they are in Russia I believe.

I did see a 25% off the Personal version good through Christmas 😉

How about instead of showing people how to continue their horrible computing habits, you dedicate a thread or two to teaching people how to be smart about the interweb.

How about not everyone gets viruses due to bad computing habits. Both IE and Firefox have had of late be comprimised by some stupid banner ad that enables a java script that... well anyway in the end you end up with a trojan that phones home for more bugs. I got that critter and I have never had a virus before, there is also one called Vundo that can find you if you are using a non pw protected shared folder.. its not always about what you download - some of the bugs are pretty well written.

Even though it doesn't have an auto update feature, Anti-Vir + SP2 = hard not to update. I usually scan every so often for updates but if I ever go for too long SP2 usually tells me the AV might be out of date reminding me to update. I've had a few virus attacks but nothing Anti-Vir couldn't handle, usually the virus doesn't even make it onto the system. Have spent nothing on it in the 2+ years I've used it (obviously because it is free for personal use), and it has only gotten better in terms of updating the virus definitions and software, obviously the survey sucks which only came about in the past few weeks (for me at least). Free + no bloat + high detection rate = hard to beat. I'd consider switching to pay service if I felt the service wasn't efficient enough but it does its job and doesn't get in the way.

Well i just formated a h/d and installed XP pro,and did the SP2 update,
then installed Anti-Vir,I have ZoneAlarm free firewall;

It shows a constant upload/download from Anti-vir,untill i turned the program off.
I did the updates, last night, and today for the program too.
😕
Arrgh

I hate XP,it shows like 23 programs in the task manager when I hit ctrl/alt/delete.

With ME it would show like 4,and I knew what they were, could get it down to just systray/explore.

KISS Keep it simple stupid. 😉

Thanks, I went there, and recall reading about that site about a year and a half ago.
i think the site has improved.

I will hook the printer up,and print out the hints, and try some. 🙂

I defragged the hard drive, and restarted the computer,Its a little better, after the defrag,
but I shall try turning off some of the programs,as suggested.

Thanks,Lee/"moron" 😉

P.S. Thanks also for the Review on the Anti-Virus programs,

especially to include some free ones, was very nice.

I have used Panda-online free scan and been happy with it,but, its not running in the background, like the
Anti-Vir can. 🙂

I use extendia antivirus, witch is a antivirus program from hell. it uses two engines at once. one that M$ might licence as a future antivirus for windows (RAV) and the kaspersky engine, and it's cheap too.
only draw back is if you do a full system scan using both engines at once (you can disable one or the other) it takes a while> but on the plus side first time i ran it I found 8 virus' that norton 2004 didn't find.
