My street has parllel parking and I've seen a bunch of people who keep reversing, while facing forward, until their high bumper hits the grill of the car behind. Now, go forward and bump the car infront. Rinse repeat, walk away.

Side mirrors let you line up the car with the space. As for how far to pull back, I guess it's just practice.
