Well he was first among his peers, although the peer group is not one I'd like to associate with. I think he did some real good in the world; certainly had a lot of influence anyway.
^^^ I can go with this.

I've worked as a sales engineer via my two different employers spanning 12 years with both Billy Graham ministries and his son Franklin's Samaritan's Purse. I'm not religious at all, but these two have been my favorite accounts over the years. As an organization they ultimately employ people of devote faith. I can't say that is part of it, but these two accounts have been the most ethical in my dealings with customers. Honest to a fault and the people I've worked with in IT at either place have genuinely been kind and considerate, making it a point to get to know me. I have a soft spot for Samaritan's as they do a lot of good around the world in feeding people and helping those in the aftermath of disasters here and abroad.

I also live in Charlotte... Which has been home to Billy Graham who stands out as one of purest of preachers... He still lived in their little log cabin. Then again, we were also home to the Bakers and now home to that Elevation Church con artist. Can't win them all.

For anyone who thinks Billy Graham was just another televangelist, or who's too young to remember a time when televangelists and pastors weren't all begging for private jets...please watch this clip. Took a lot of courage to bring whites and blacks and coloreds together and preach this message in apartheid South Africa

Charity, and the fact that he may be "a nice guy," hardly makes up for the harm he's done and will continue to do. The best thing would have been for no commentary about him at all, from anyone. But this swooning over him was a bit much. There's also good reason to think he was an anti-semite. So, a somehow benevolent, anti semitic, idiot (if sincere) who performed works of charity, while spreading damaging propaganda. A bit like someone from Hezbollah, with, i don't know, whatever advantages he had (don't really know that much about the guy).

They are going to have his body laying in state at The Cove, a.k.a. Billy Graham Center, which is only about 5 miles from where I live. It is right off I40 at exit 55, which I suspect will be completely hosed up for the rest of the week.

Since he lived/died 15 miles from here, the local media is non-stop feeding frenzy. California could fall into the sea and I doubt it would get coverage.

For what it is worth, I didn't feel a disturbance in the force, nor did the ground tremble.

Yes he had a lot of influence, and taught many the hatred and bigotry toward those with different views or whom they happened to love.

I don't know much about him either but for me that meant I had nothing to say.

Never really liked the guy due to his effect on national politics, but I will admit he was far from the worst among that reprehensible group of morally bankrupt social authoritarian dipshits we call evangelicals.

RIP I guess.

Felt a little bad for having such a superficial knowledge of this particular conman, so I did a little research and found this comprehensive summary of his life:

Because most rich people love their money more than they love God. I seriously doubt this was the case for Mr. Graham. Anyway, God is the only one who knows who's going where.

This comes to my mind right now.
Matthew 7:21-23 New International Version (NIV)
True and False Disciples
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

For not knowing much about the guy, you apparently know enough to completely disrespect him in his passing. Nice form!

Yeah, well, I think you're disrespecting Einstein, and completely missing his point. It's been, what, 5 years now that i've been saying this. To the extent he was sincere, I agree we should be respectful, but the more I learn about this guy the less I think he was, and there was lauding, so it's also a balance issue. If no thread and no lauding then no criticism.

Ahhh Hitch, how I miss you.

I will admit I had completely forgotten about the Nixon tape stuff. Graham focused his efforts on politics rather than the accumulation of wealth, a la the typical conjob involving 'love offerings' or 'prosperity seeds,' and this has people thinking he was less loathsome than a Creflo Dollar, a Benny Hinn, etc. Even me apparently, but the more I think about it the more I realize Graham probably has a more lasting detrimental effect to the country than some holy roller frauds getting rich off of stupid people.

Some of these peoples drive is to accumulate money and things (mansions, jets, etc.) others understand that the real wealth is in the accumulation of power.

He spent a life time selling a lie. Now to only discover it was a lie... except for the fact he just faded to the nothingness of death.

Generally I hate Christians, they're such bigots...but he was ok...I guess. /s

I never said he was ok. Becoming a multi-millionaire (as he did) spreading demonstrable false fables and denying science is hardly worthy of much other than utter contempt.
