Reusing Spring Water Bottles Unhealthy?

In a passing conversation with my co-worker, he mentioned to me that he heard that re-using spring water bottles can be harmful to one's health. I usually drink Poland Spring Water and sometimes from 1.5L bottles. Instead of throwing it out, I'd save one and reuse it, filling it with filtered water when I can. Is it bad to reuse the bottles or is it just one of those false myths?

Well, nothing magical happens when you open it so if it's bad to reuse them it's bad to use them the first time. It's true that depending on a given bottle's plastic chemicals can leech into the water. This is normally of greater concern to people using BPA products (typically these are the stiffer, designed-for-reuse bottles).

Your co-worker is incorrect.

Eh, I wouldn't be too sure of that. Plastics are pretty crappy when it comes to leeching harmful compounds. I would say it's just as risky as drinking from the bottle for the first time. Plastic isn't very inert so it's not guaranteed to not break down into your water. I understand that plastic is hydrophobic, but water can essentially break anything down if you give it enough time.

Bolded is why I made my statement. The co-worker thinks plastic bottles are a-ok the first time, but if you fill it from the tap....CANCER?

Seems kinda silly.

The best option is to use a reusable bottle that is specifically made of no- or low-leaching materials (I prefer stainless steel for water).

Hmm using gonad's kind link, I learned that my water bottle I got from my last company is apparently cancerous and going to kill me.

OH well. My new company gave me one of those horrendously annoying skinny metal ones, its on my desk but I'm not going to use it. Cancer's got nothing on me.
