Restoring Healthy Stomach Bacteria

Cliff's -
* breathed some water into my lungs
* got sick
* started taking antibiotics

... as described in another post where i was marvelling at the sheer quantity of mucus my body is expelling.

so i started taking penicillin on Sunday (400 mg twice a day), and am starting to take
Cephalexin today (500 mg once, or twice if i can stomach it.)

i know from past experience that this is going to hurt my stomach. but, it's something i need to do because i'm not getting better.

Question - what can you take to restore the good bacteria that aid the digestive process, after you've nuked it by taking heavy antibiotics ?

from past experience, i'm pretty sure that non-pasteurized yogurt is a good thing to eat.

what other foods/ medications are good for restoring stomach bacteria ?

thanks much for any advice. whether it's from your own experience as a patient or your expertise as a doctor or nurse.

You can take probiotic supplements. They sell them in Whole Foods and health food stores.
I don't know how well they work, though. I would just stick to eating yogurt (unpasteurized, like you said) in addition to eating regular foods. Your little buddies should come back 🙂

Isn't activia supposed to do that?

It's funny how I used to eat Activia made with Splenda. In reference to the Splenda killing gut flora 😛

Anyhow, I've read up that sauerkraut is an excellent source of probiotics. I'm unsure as to whether this is an old wife's tale, but it can't hurt to try. Might wanna google it.

"Lactobacillus species are used for the production of yogurt, cheese, sauerkraut, pickles, beer, wine, cider, kimchi, chocolate and other fermented foods, as well as animal feeds such as silage."

From here. I've also been reading that, as said in the statement, that fermented foods are good for this.

As a person with ulcerative colitis who has many stomach/digestive problems, as suggested you should give Kiefer or similar products a go. You will find it at most grocery and whole food stores. Also maybe add some Fish Oil to your diet regimen.

If it were me, kefir. It has a reputation for restoring intestinal bacteria. Google it. I have packets of freeze dried starter (keeps for years in spite of any expiration dates is my experience) and make my own any time I want using non fat dry milk. You can make your next batch using a few tablespoons of the last batch. Works for a few batches. I spike keifir (and plain yogurt, which I also produce at home using a spoon of plain yogurt as starter) with preserves. I think yogurt may also be helpful.

Probiotics. You really won't be able to get nearly the same dosage from food.
Only pathologic bacteria live in the stomach (e.g. H. Pylori). The bacteria you want hang out in the colon.

OK, thanks for the helpful replies.

i took a 500 mg Cephalexin b*mb yesterday. Jesus, it works.

will be loading up on kefir etc. the next few days (buying it that is).

Yeah, all the cool kids hang out in the colon. I was like, "can I come in?"
and they were all like, "no way man, you're a nerd. Go back to AnandTech where you belong"
and I was all like 🙁
