Loved MTG and did well in tourneys but got out when they crippled combo decks in Type 2 and Extended. I know it ticked people off but I always got a kick out of things like Donating an Illusions of Grandeur to my opponent.

I stopped shortly after Erza's Saga but never sold my card. I thought about getting back into it but the rules seem so complicated now...

MTG is the most pay to win thing since p2w was invented.

As a 15 year old casual gamer powered by lunch money, I destroyed a lot of 30 year olds with money using my cheaply built better constructed decks.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of now that I'm 30 =X

i've played MTG since Unlimited. I even owned a couple Mox at the time. (totally dropped the game when they took out interrupts)

We've had people spend thousands to build winning decks. After Legends, when they really started cranking out the expansions, and limiting the cards to only that set of 3, people who go through hundreds of euros to build a deck, just to throw it out when the set was done. And then start again.

Greed killed what was a really fun game, even with the P2W element.

(and if you are owning people with a cheap deck, it's because they suck.)

yea that's true DigDog. it was what 1 expansion a year and a core every 3 or so back in the day, now it seems there is an expansion ever 3 months

I've had fun with mtg over the years. If I had friends that wanted to play for fun if draft or whatever.

Variations are always fun with friends. I used to play "crap magic" where we'd just pull a random handful from a big box of Commons, shuffle in lands that would be treated as all five land types, and play.

I don't buy boosters... just singles.

Singles is usually the way to go if you have a specific deck in mind.

I could never resist boosters, though, and usually just went with those. Except for a couple of Kismets I was missing for a Kismet-Stasis deck back in the day, and an Italian Goblin King I got off someone for like $3, I always just went with boosters.

I wonder if they still make ante cards, if so, it's always fun to steal some shit off someone with better cards, especially your friends!

WTF is this shit? up down, +/-?!?!??! What ever happened to tap? And whats with just a 5 in the lower right hand corner? Back in my day, Magic was fun and easy and we only had to walk up a hill in the snow to the comic store to buy packs.

Yep they introduced a lot of shit in the series like Planeswalkers. The number on the lower right is it's starting "Points" to cast the stuff in the action box. +1 means that when you use this skill it gives you +1 Points and -X reduces your pool.

I never played with these and don't plan too. But i'll hang on to this card and see if I can fetch a nice price down the road.

There is a new core set each year that is a mix older cards. Then there is the block set that starts in the fall in October, another in February and one in April.

Yeah I bought the M15 core set (deckbuilder toolkit) and it's an awesome way to have some cards and deckbuild for like $20. You get 285 cards total separated in 100 lands, 4 boosters and like +/-125 cards in all five colors.

It is, but its hard to keep Planeswalkers on the board sometimes. The rule if remember correctly is they cannot be targetted directly. But if you deal dmg to the player you can redirect it to the Planeswalker. So if this guy starts at 5 and say you used 2 +1 abilities he would be at 7 points. And then the guy you are playing has an 8/8 creature out you cannot block. Instead of doing the 8 dmg to you, he can do it to the Planeswalker, killing it basically.

Planeswalkers are not a creature that can attack of block like a typical creature either.

And only the one dealing dmg can redirect it, you as the player being hit cannot redirect it (in a situation that it might save your life) for example.

Kinda confusing. Not a huge fan of them in general.

It's probably been almost a year now that I've been playing MtG with a friend from the gym (go figure). He never stopped playing and collecting while I stopped after high school. He's got an entire cabinet filled with his cubes and unopened boxes/packs. He does well for himself and estimates to have $5K in unopened packs (retail value, he tends to hunt for mislabeled auctions and old supply).

I've really enjoyed it as he's supplying the cards and we random draft every time. I get to learn modern mechanics without having to shell out the money and the winner is ultimately the luckiest in the draw and whoever had the best strategy. Good times.

Rules for Planewalkers:
1) when the Planewalkers is cast place as many loyalty counters on it equal to the number in the bottom right corner.
2) only on your turn your turn you can use 1 of the PW abilities. Add or subtract loyalty counters to the PW.
3) to use the subtract ability the PW must have at least that number of loyalty counters.
4) if the PW has zero loyalty counters then place it into the graveyard.
5) if the other player attacks with a creature on his turn and you do not declare a blocker for it then he can decide to do the PW instead of you. Remove the number of loyalty counters equal to the damage from the creature's power.
6) direct damage can target the PW.

That's so funny, I started again from scratch during the Fate Reforged Pre-release this past weekend. It was fun, but I was too unfamiliar with Morph/manifest to do anywhere near decent. I'm going to slowly get back into it, but this time I'm going to try and avoid buying booster boxes. It's fun opening booster boxes, but nowadays the return is abysmally low.

One thing I did notice is how hard Wizards is riding this game again in regards to expansions/sets. They must really be rolling in the dough to release so many sets and not care about overdoing it.
