Resetting BIOS password on a laptop

Status
Not open for further replies.
I decided motherboards would be a better place to put this even though this is a laptop.

My friend's GF has a laptop. I've worked on this one before and never had any problem. He said he was trying to reinstall Windows and "all of a sudden" the BIOS is asking him for a password.

It's an older Dell Inspiron 1000

I pulled out the keyboard, and was able to pull out the BIOS/cmos battery.

I let it sit over night.

Booted it up and it BIOS did the typical "loading cmos from defaults"..

Yet, still get a password prompt.

Clearing the cmos using does it.

Any ideas?

I think this old thread has run it's course.

Yes I have an Idea ... As member of the unofficial ACER support team, at NBR forums .

Stop trying to load unsupported windows version on it .

.

kiriakos is barking up the wrong tree.

The laptop prompting for a boot password has nothing to do with the Windows SLP key embedded in the BIOS for licensing reasons.

And normally, that password is actually flashed into the BIOS. Clearing the CMOS will NOT bypass it.

If everyone doesn't mind I can generate any bios or system password for someone for Free to bypass the bios/system password.

All you have to do is post your service tag should end in something like

-595B
It will be the number on the screen that ask you to enter your password should be a gray screen and I assure everyone, I will post your master password for free.Just offering some computer kindness because I once went through this and everyone I found wanted money or a so called contribution, and it frustrated me not even (D) hell would help me but i figured out a solution so hit me up I would love to help you out!

Yes you are right except on laptops it is not stored in your bios chip it is stored seperately in a eprom chip that has nothing to do with your bios and only on laptops that I know of.You can clear the cmos for a year and the system password will still be there!

As joeguy420 posted, the password is stored in non-volitile EPROM. If he doesn't reply, your best shot is to contact Dell tech support. They should be able to direct you to an authorized local tech who has the tools to reprogram the password for the BIOS, or you can search for a local authorized Dell tech shop.

Good luck. 🙂

Just chiming in here:

This makes total sense now. Back in 2007, a family member bought me an Alienware laptop. I forget its exact model now, but, it came with Vista on it. I didn't care for Vista, so I wanted to go to XP. There are versions of my laptop that shipped with XP, but once it was officially released, XP was no longer an option for the OS.

I found all the drivers I needed, and created a slipstreamed XP CD. I reboot, and I'm greeted with an 'INPUT PASSWORD' screen at the BIOS, and I had never set a BIOS password. I tried every method of clearing any BIOS passwords, and nothing worked. I was 2 months out of warranty, and the whole thing was a total loss.

Overpriced garbage.

Yes you still need to erase the non-volitile eprom, which I have a iso program specifically programed to erase this eprom chip on dell laptops.I would be willing to share this program that erases the eprom chip, someone would just have to send me a private message and I would be glad to send you the file for it!

Don't. You're potentially facilitating illegal activity in doing so.

First off this is a Dell proprietary piece of software intended for use by authorized technicians only.

Second, and more importantly, by handing out BIOS master passwords like candy, you're potentially providing thieves full access to system hardware and more importantly the data that is on that system. Just because someone says its a laptop "donated to their pastor" doesn't mean it is.

IMHO, this thread should have been locked from the get go. Frankly, I'm surprised it's lasted this long.

Well everything I have and have done I have got ahold for free on the internet.I once had a laptop...not a stolen one...that was out of warranty so dell was no help to me and everyone wanted a payment to generate me a masterpassword so I guess this is my motivation for offering this service for free. Why can geek squade generate you a master password and erase your eprom chip for a price and it is ok?

I did not want to offend anyone here just trying to help others with a headache,as with anything, thieves ruin everything...so I will not be here no more to help with this problem.

I will add this,if you are not a thief and really do get locked out of your laptop, just search online and with some patience and determination, you will find what you are looking for.Good luck to all,and again sorry to offend anyone!

Don't worry about it. Those bios passwords are not to keep someones data secure. It is actually a bug in the bios code that they supposedly have fixed in newer models. After you get in the first thing you should do is flash it with the newest bios. The problem results from cmos updates. Bios normally update the status on whether the OS boot was successful or not. Some of the bios have a bug that when windows installs and accesses the bios for licensing the flags were set wrong and it overflows into the eeprom write code. When the error occurs it triggers the password whether it was enabled or not.

The only models that are designed to secure data are the ones that contain a TPM . Those require you to physically access the chip and even then you need special programmers to gain access. But this isn't a tpm. It is a 50 cent atmel eeprom and hundreds of programs can access them and the data on how to is on atmels own site because it isn't supposed to be confidential or secret.

Sorry Joey, thes old eyes aren't what they use to be. I typed the wrong letter in the password, it worked when i typed the right one. God bless you. The hard drive is password protected also, will purchase a new one.

Guys you might want to send joeyguy a pm, there is a small chance he will respond but it looks like he isnt watching the forum anymore, somebody started shouting at him for handing out the passwords and he ran away.

Sunnyd please dont take this as a personal jibe, you obviously have one opinion on the legality of handing these pw's out and i respect that although i dont agree with you as they arent user set pw's i dont see how anyone could expect part of their use to be to protect info contained on the laptop.
